I&M Canal Trail Recommendations

I have a gravel bike, a car, and a free weekend (3/21-22). I'd love to make a loop out of the I&M Canal Trail, but don't know where to start. Seems like some parts are really nice while others are barely accessible. Ideally it would be a loop totaling \~50 miles, but I can…

Reviews Summary

Gebhard Woods State Park is a quiet, peaceful spot with access to the I&M Canal Trail, appreciated for its mature trees and picnic areas. However, some visitors note that water levels can be low, and camping restroom facilities may be inaccessible due to vandalism. Despite these drawbacks, it's considered a nice place for a walk, especially in the fall, and a good entry point for trail adventures.

"It looks like Gebhard Woods State Park has had better days in the past. All the ponds and water are dried up. Even the I&M Canal nearby is dried up. You have to go east near William G. Stratton State Park to see the canal, or I imagine more west is ok too.

It looked like there were some renovations occurring on the I&M Canal, so hopefully, the park is in better shape in the future.

Still, this state park is quiet, peaceful, and has natural beauty. It has access to the I&M Canal Trail. There's a playground, parking, picnic shelter, and restrooms available."

"Gebhard Woods State Park is between Nettle Creek and the Illinois & Michigan Canal. This is a great entry point for hiking, or cycling along the Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail. Parking, benches, restrooms, and a drinking fountain are on-site. Come fish, hike, paddle, snowmobile, cross country ski, or camp. Call for availability. Great spot for a picnic. Stratton State Park is nearby. Great park for a picnic or a walk."
