Reviews Summary

Memaloose State Park offers stunning Columbia River views and spacious, clean campsites, but is significantly impacted by constant noise from the adjacent highway and railroad tracks. While well-maintained with friendly staff, visitors strongly advise bringing earplugs and being aware of access challenges, especially for eastbound travelers. Reddit

"The park itself is beautiful with some great views of the river in a few spots and if it was located anywhere else I'd like to stay again. However, I-84 🚚 🛻 🚛 🚒 🚚 is just a few short yards away on your left & then on your right just a few short yards away is the railroad tracks 🛤 Both are heavily traveled day & night and even though we were in our travel trailer, the traffic & trains were pretty loud. The 3½ days we were there we also had the pleasure of listening to a few campers barking dogs every time someone either drove or walked by their camps and they would lose their shite while they were passing. Yet as always with our state parks, it was really pretty & very well maintained by some really friendly camp hosts and State Park employees."

Patrick “Twice” Knox

"Pros: Gorgeous view! Very clean and spacious ground. Bathrooms and showers are decent.

Cons: Sandwiched between a highway and railroad means there is a constant noise. Only accessible from the highway westbound, which means anytime you leave and return it will be at minimum a 10 mile round trip.

Unique: Railroads are on both sides of the Columbia River. Watching trains run from across the river, especially at night, feels really special."

Ben Hill

"This is one of the most beautiful rest stops in the state of Oregon. It is well worth stopping at, if for no other reason than to stretch your legs and enjoy the views."

Navigating the Noise: Tips for a Peaceful Stay

Memaloose State Park's prime location along the Columbia River comes with a significant trade-off: constant noise from the adjacent I-84 highway and active railroad tracks. Many visitors find this to be a major drawback, describing the sound as pervasive day and night. Reddit To mitigate this, bringing earplugs is almost universally recommended by those who have stayed here. Reddit Some campers suggest strategically choosing campsites further from the highway or tracks, though the noise can still carry. If you're a light sleeper or seeking absolute tranquility, this might not be the ideal park. However, for those who can tune out the ambient sounds, the park offers beautiful river views and a convenient base for exploring the Gorge. Reddit

Making the Best of It

Despite the noise, many visitors still find value in Memaloose State Park. The spacious and clean campsites are a definite plus, offering ample room for RVs and tents. Reddit The park is also well-maintained by friendly staff. Reddit If you plan to spend most of your time exploring the Columbia River Gorge and only need a place to sleep, the park's location can be advantageous. Just be sure to manage your expectations regarding noise levels and pack accordingly. Reddit

Access and Detours: Planning Your Travel

One of the most frequently mentioned logistical challenges at Memaloose State Park is its access, particularly for eastbound travelers. The park is primarily accessible from the westbound lanes of I-84. This means that if you are heading east, you'll need to exit the highway, find a way to cross over to the westbound lanes, or take a considerable detour to re-enter the eastbound lanes further down the road. Reddit This can add significant time and inconvenience to your travel plans, especially if you're making frequent trips in and out of the park. Reddit

Strategic Planning is Key

To avoid unnecessary detours, it's crucial to plan your excursions carefully. If you know you'll be heading east, consider visiting your destination first and then returning to the park. Alternatively, if you plan on exploring areas west of the park, your access will be more straightforward. Reddit Some visitors have noted temporary exit closures that can further complicate navigation, so it's always wise to check local traffic conditions before you travel. Reddit Despite these access challenges, the park's location offers a unique perspective on the Columbia River and its busy transportation corridors. Reddit

Beyond the Park: Wildflowers and Gorge Exploration

While Memaloose State Park itself is more of a scenic campground and rest stop, the surrounding Columbia River Gorge is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, especially those seeking wildflowers. If you're looking for a hike with abundant spring blooms, Mosier Cape Viewpoint is a highly recommended option. Reddit This area offers a beautiful, relatively short hike that provides a welcome splash of color, reminiscent of wildflower fields. Reddit

Beyond Mosier Cape, consider exploring other nearby trails that showcase the region's diverse flora.
