What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Lincoln is celebrated for its challenging yet rewarding hikes, particularly the Decalibron loop, offering stunning summit views and a sense of accomplishment. Hikers appreciate the unique terrain and historical mining remnants. However, the extreme wind on the ridge and the rough road access are frequently cited drawbacks.
"Favorite out of the 4 decalibron 14ers, has the coolest summit, is the highest, however the ridge in between Cameron and Lincoln can get extremely windy, gusts of 40+ when I was there. Couple good photo ops and places to hide from the wind in the summit though"

"Once you're atop Mt. Cameron or Bross, getting to the top of Mt. Lincoln is easy and a bit adventurous! The trail to the top is along a knife ridge and involves a short class 2 (on a nice day) climb to the summit. You can see quite a bit from there! Interesting thing to look for are yhe mines and also the two geological markers. Have a nice hike!"

"Summit number 3 on a 4 peak loop. An awesome way to spend a summer day in the mountains. Rough road, definitely need a suv or truck to get to the trailhead"

The trailhead is accessed via a rough, unpaved road. A high-clearance vehicle, such as an SUV or truck, is strongly recommended to navigate the rocky terrain. Some visitors have noted it's about a 41-minute drive from Breckenridge, but this can be significantly impacted by winter weather.
The road is typically only accessible during the summer months when snow has melted. Winter access is generally not possible for standard vehicles.
From Denver, you'll typically take US-285 South towards Fairplay, then head north on CO-9 towards Alma. The turnoff for the trailhead will be from County Road 12.
Currently, there are no widely advertised shuttle services directly to the Mount Lincoln trailhead. It's best to plan for private transportation. π
Parking is available at the trailhead, but it can fill up quickly on busy summer weekends. Arriving early is advised. π ΏοΈ
π« π« Tickets & Entry
Generally, no specific permits or tickets are required for hiking Mount Lincoln itself. However, access to some adjacent peaks like Bross may have restrictions due to private land ownership and safety concerns. Always check local regulations before your hike. ποΈ
Mount Lincoln is a natural mountain peak and does not have set operating hours. It is accessible during daylight hours when the road is clear of snow. :clock10:
There is no entrance fee to access Mount Lincoln. The costs are primarily associated with transportation and any personal gear you might need. :moneywithwings:
Camping is available in the surrounding areas, such as near Alma. Dispersed camping might be an option in designated national forest areas, but always check regulations and practice Leave No Trace principles. βΊ
While Mount Lincoln itself is generally open for climbing, be aware of potential trespassing issues on neighboring peaks like Mount Bross due to private land. Always respect signage and private property.
π« π₯Ύ Onsite Experience
The hike to Mount Lincoln is considered strenuous. It involves significant elevation gain (around 2,500 ft) and a 6-mile round trip if doing just Lincoln, or longer for the Decalibron loop. The terrain can be rocky and steep, with a notable knife-edge ridge. :hiking_boot:
Many hikers recommend the Decalibron loop, which includes Mounts Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross. For this loop, hiking clockwise (up Democrat, down Bross) is often suggested for a better experience.
A hike to Mount Lincoln and back can take anywhere from 4 to 7 hours, depending on your fitness level and whether you are doing the full Decalibron loop. Some have completed four 14ers in a day starting in the afternoon.
Expect spectacular 360-degree views of the surrounding Colorado Rockies. You can see other 14ers and the vast mountain landscape. The summit offers excellent photo opportunities. :camerawithflash:
The primary hazards include extreme wind on the ridge, rapidly changing weather, loose scree, and potential for altitude sickness. The knife-edge ridge requires careful footing.

The summit itself offers incredible panoramic views. The knife-edge ridge provides dramatic perspectives, and the remnants of old mines add historical interest to your shots. :camerawithflash:
Early morning or late afternoon light can be stunning, offering softer light and fewer crowds. However, be mindful of rapidly changing weather and ensure you have enough daylight to descend safely. π
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the expansive landscapes. A sturdy tripod can be helpful, but consider the wind. A polarizing filter can enhance sky and landscape colors. :iphone:
Look for the geological markers, remnants of old mining equipment, and the unique alpine flora that survives at high altitudes. The dramatic ridge formations are also a key subject. :mountain_snow:
