What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Papakōlea Green Sand Beach is a truly unique and memorable destination, celebrated for its rare green sand and dramatic coastal setting. Visitors often describe the journey, whether hiking or taking a local 4x4, as an adventure in itself. While the effort is significant, the reward of seeing one of the world's few green sand beaches is widely considered worth it.
"We walked but if you are not a hiker this is not a stroll on the beach be prepared with plenty of water and good shoes. This is not a flip flop kind of footwear hike you will regret that decision. The sun and wind exposure are real, had a pretty good headwind on the way there. You can take a ride from the locals not sure of any details on that option. They portable toilets but bring your own paper. Locals also had bottled drinks for sale."

"Amazing experience!
I rented a Jeep but I’m glad I had the local lady to drive us there and back. Very knowledgeable and down to earth.
You can walk 2.8 miles but definitely not for the weak. Very steep getting down to the actual beach.
Cool down with some shaved ice after, roughly a mile drive leaving heading back out."

"Such a unique and beautiful spot—one of only four green sand beaches in the world! The sand, though olive-green, sparkles. Seemingly small, it is peaceful and incredibly picturesque once you arrive.
Either way you get there, it is definitely an adventure. The hike is long, hot, windy, and rough—definitely not beginner-friendly. There's zero shade, no signs, and no bathrooms, so if you're hiking, come prepared with water, sunscreen, and expect to be dusty by the time you arrive.
Honestly, paying $20 (cash) to a local for a round-trip ride in a 4x4 pickup truck is totally worth it. I got lucky and rode in the front passenger seat—great view and way smoother than standing in the back of the truck, which gets seriously bumpy. The ride takes about 30 minutes each way, and the driver gives you about an hour at the beach before heading back. It's bumpy but a lot of fun, and I wouldn't try driving it in a personal vehicle.
Once you're there, there's a short but steep path down to the beach with some broken stairs—just take your time. Shade is very limited, with only a few rocks, which are usually already taken, offer cover.
Overall, this place is a must-see if you're on the Big Island. Between the wild ride and the rare green sand, it's a one-of-a-kind experience you won't forget."

The Science Behind the Green Sand
While there are only three other known green sand beaches globally (Guam, Norway, and the Galapagos Islands), Papakōlea is often cited as the most accessible and visually striking. The intensity of the green color can vary depending on the light and the concentration of olivine crystals present on the sand at any given time.
Navigating the Journey: Hike vs. 4x4
Alternatively, local 4x4 rides offer a more thrilling and less strenuous option. For around $20 per person (cash), local drivers will take you to the beach in their pickup trucks. This ride is known for being bumpy and adventurous, often described as feeling like an Indiana Jones movie. While it saves energy, it's still a rough journey, and standing in the truck bed can be quite jarring. This option is ideal for those who want to conserve energy for enjoying the beach itself.
Experiencing the Beach and Ocean
Shade on the beach is very limited, with only a few rocks offering respite, and these are often occupied. The overall atmosphere is described as peaceful and surreal, offering a unique natural wonder. The surrounding landscape is also incredibly picturesque, adding to the overall memorable experience.
