The challenging, rocky trail is seen as a rewarding aspect, though some find the steepness difficult. The rough access road is a notable point of caution for drivers.
"I have been hiking weekly for about 6 months now, which I know isn’t that long, but this was definitely one of my favorite hikes in North Carolina so far. we got there pretty early right about 730, there was a handful of cars and there was only a couple other people hiking, which was nice as it wasn’t too crowded. It is a out and back hike the totals about 2 miles. It was a great hike and had a couple strenuous parts in it, but for the most part was moderate. The views halfway up and from the top were beautiful. I kind of compared it to Rough Ridge, but Hawksbill is so much better.!"

"Beautiful trail with lots of wildlife. The trail is rocky and technical in some areas, and uphill most of the way but it levels out eventually and it's totally worth going all the way to the end! I trail run and opted to run back so I was able to complete it in about 2 hours."
Brittney Bartell
"There road to get there is very rough and you need a suitable vehicle. The trail is a difficult one, basically a climb up the mountain with tree roots and rocks the entire way up. The view is absolutely incredible once you make it. Coming down is easier of course. I doubt I try it ever again but glad I can say I did."
