What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
While many praise Crater Lakes Trail for its stunning alpine lakes, wildflowers, and shaded forest sections, some visitors report overwhelming crowds and litter on weekends, likening it to a 'frat party.' The trail's moderate difficulty and dog-friendly nature are consistent positives, but the potential for overcrowding detracts from the peaceful wilderness experience for some.
"Crater Lakes is a raging frat party.
We got to the lake on a Saturday about 11am, and there were easily over 150 people already there. Every logical camping space was already taken, and people were beginning to pitch tents way too close to the lakeshore and trampling vegetation. People were also fishing from just about every place on the lakeshore (obviously, nobody was catching anything - it was way too loud and busy).
Before long, somebody started throwing rocks into the lake. There was visible toilet paper strewn around in the trees near the lake.
On the way down, we passed at least 5 other large groups hiking in with full backpacks and gear. I honestly have no idea where everybody intended to pitch their tent, but I will not be coming back.
This is definitely not a peaceful or restful place. The forest service should probably begin requiring permits here."
