What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise New Harmony for its unique history, charming architecture, and peaceful atmosphere, often highlighting the Roofless Church and the informative town tours. However, some reviews mention limited shop hours and a less-than-ideal visitor center design. A few guests have also noted issues with tour guide conduct.
"Unique town and museum, with compelling history and beauty. Unfortunately our tram tour turned sour when our guide humiliated a guest who he felt was talking too much. Yes, she was chatty, but she was amiable and enjoying the sites. It was embarrassing to hear him say "I'm the tour guide, let me do the talking." The woman was so embarrassed she and her husband gracefully asked to end their tour (he said he wasn't feeling well) and we were left feeling bad about the whole situation. The guide could've handled it much more gracefully, as any decent teacher would. Pretty ironic, considering it was a tour of New Harmony."

"Take time for a town history tour. Very well done."
Tami Johnson White
"The town has great charm. The locals are friendly and knowledgeable. It's quiet and quaint. Most shops were closed when we went, therefore, I gave it a 4⭐."

The Utopian Experiments of New Harmony
Shortly after, the Welsh social reformer Robert Owen purchased the land and, along with his partner William Maclure, founded a new utopian society. This community aimed to create an ideal environment for education, social equality, and scientific advancement. While Owen's experiment eventually dissolved, its legacy profoundly shaped the town's identity and attracted intellectuals and artists.
Today, Historic New Harmony preserves the remnants and stories of these fascinating social experiments. Visitors can explore historic buildings, learn about the philosophies that guided these communities, and reflect on their enduring impact on American history. The Atheneum Visitors Center serves as a modern gateway to understanding this rich past.
Architectural Gems and Unique Landmarks
Contrasting with the historic structures is the Historic New Harmony Atheneum, a contemporary building that houses visitor services and exhibits. Its modern design has been noted by some as a departure from the town's aesthetic, while others appreciate it as a functional and informative hub.
Other notable sites include preserved 19th-century homes like the AC Thomas House, offering a glimpse into domestic life during the town's formative years, and the Opera House, which has hosted performances for generations. The town's layout itself, with its grid of streets and communal spaces, reflects the planning principles of its founders.
Festivals and Community Events
Another significant event is Heritage Artisans Days, typically held in late April, showcasing skilled craftspeople and their work. These events provide a fantastic opportunity to experience the town's lively atmosphere, discover local talent, and perhaps find unique souvenirs.
Beyond these major festivals, New Harmony often hosts smaller community gatherings, markets, and performances, making it a dynamic destination year-round. Checking the local events calendar before your visit can help you plan around these engaging activities.
