What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the stunning natural beauty and scenic vistas of the Niagara Gorge Rim Trail, particularly during the fall foliage season. Many appreciate the opportunity for hiking and biking, and the unique perspective offered by trails descending into the gorge. However, some reviewers note issues with litter and graffiti in certain areas, and the steep staircases can be a challenge for some.
"One of the most scenic trails that we’ve ever been on. Perfect for a long walk or bike ride. We rode a rented city bike up to the Whirlpool State Park from Goat Island. Parts are gravel and parts are a concrete sidewalk depending on which way you go. You could stay on the sidewalk all the way if you wanted though."

"First time stopping to see the Niagara Gorge View, and it was so beautiful! We went in the peak of fall to see the foliage, and it did not disappoint. The water is extremely blue and is beautiful to see, especially with the fall colors in the trees! There are plenty of different trail entrances that have stairs that lead you down, but be aware there are a lot of stairs! So if you find stairs to be difficult, then it may not be the best for you. (The view from the top is just as good) There was a small lot to park right by the trailhead we went too but I'm not sure if every trailhead has one. It wasn't too busy but it was a Monday! If you love a good view and nature and have never seen the Gorge view or ever walked the trail, I would highly recommend it!"

"Did not feel safe alone. It could be nicer.
The northern part of the park includes the Gorge Trail. The trail itself is a nice 400ft descent with views along the river. Parts of the trail are strewn with rubble from the rocks above but otherwise is a wide easy path.
While the views and trail are nice, there are piles of trash, liquor and beer containers, graffiti and is overall quite dumpy. the worst was people smoking meth both times I hiked this trail, despite a police station a quarter of a mile away."

Navigating the Niagara Gorge Trails
For a more immersive experience, trails like the Whirlpool Trail and Glen Trail lead you down into the gorge. These paths are significantly more challenging, involving numerous staircases and uneven terrain. Hikers often describe the descent as strenuous, with hundreds of steps, and the climb back up can be demanding. It's crucial to wear appropriate footwear and carry water, especially during warmer months.
Some sections, like the Schoellkopf area, have been noted for being less maintained or even closed, so it's wise to check trail conditions before you go. Despite the challenges, the unique perspective of being close to the churning water and towering cliffs is a rewarding experience for many visitors.
The USA vs. Canada Niagara Falls Experience
TikTok creators often debate which side is 'better,' with many leaning towards the Canadian side for its direct views of Horseshoe Falls and attractions like the Journey Behind the Falls. However, the USA side offers unique experiences like the Cave of the Winds, where you can get incredibly close to Bridal Veil Falls and feel the powerful mist. For those seeking a more active adventure with hiking and a less commercialized feel, the Niagara Gorge Rim Trail on the US side is a compelling choice.
Wildlife and Nature in the Gorge
Beyond birds, the gorge's unique environment supports a range of flora and fauna. During the fall, the foliage transforms the gorge into a vibrant spectacle of colors, making it a prime time for visitors seeking natural beauty. The powerful river itself, with its deep blue hues, is a constant reminder of the natural forces at play. While the focus is often on the falls, taking time to appreciate the surrounding natural environment enhances the overall experience.
