Ruidoso area hikes?
NM local here asking for help. I know nothing about the Ruidoso area so I am going to go explore it the weekend before 4th of July. I hike often in northern NM and in southern CO - are there any challenging/rewarding hikes nearby? What else should I know about the area?

Reviews Summary
Nogal Peak Trail is praised for its stunning, 'above the clouds' views and its dog-friendly nature. While the hike is challenging due to its steepness and the rough road access, the rewarding summit vistas and unique features like a heart-shaped rock make it a memorable experience for many. Visitors recommend a capable vehicle and adequate hydration.
"Very quiet and a great view kind trail located in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Had to drive through dirt and rocky off roads to get to the entrance of the trail. Did it in the springs of 2024 where you can see the highest mountain peak I saw during the hike was still snowy (on my picture gallery) and finding a unique huge rock shaped heart there aswell. Short hike to get to the peak and back but literally spend almost an hour and chill up there to notice how great the view is on top. So good you can see the city of Carrizozo from the top of Nogal peak from the north side. Other than that thereβs trails part of this area but only hike this peak and it was great for a short hike with friends. π"

"Great hike! Certainly challenging but awesome at the top and a nice 5ish mile loop around.
Bring a truck or dirt road capable van. We did it in a car and had more than our fair share of worries.
Highly recommend"

"Elevation at the summit is 9900 feet. This is a 1250 ft vertical climb with no switchbacks from the Crest trailhead. Distance to the top is 1.7 miles. The views from the top are amazing and well worth it but you must be in very good physical condition to make it. We hiked it in June in 85 degree temps and I would recommend a minimum of 2 liters of water"
