His wife sat nearby, seemingly unbothered. It became painfully clear—this wasn’t an employee breaking the rules; this was the new ownership.
I hurriedly paid and left, stepping outside with an unsettling thought: had I just stepped into a time warp and landed in the wrong part of town in the '80s? Sadly, no. Our once-quaint country store had devolved into something unrecognizable—a complete dump.
