What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the unique adventure of Ladder Canyon and Painted Canyon, highlighting the thrilling ladders and the stunning sandstone slot canyons. While the hike is moderate and rewarding, the challenging dirt road access and intense midday sun on exposed sections are common drawbacks.
"The Ladders Trail near Mecca California is one of the most memorable desert hikes I have ever done. The experience feels like a true adventure from the moment you step into the narrow entrance of Painted Canyon. Towering sandstone walls rise above you and the light reflects in warm shades of pink gold and cream. The famous ladders are sturdy and secure and they add an exciting element that keeps everyone engaged. Climbing up feels rewarding without being overly technical and older kids and fit adults will likely find it manageable. The trail also offers stretches of calm walking through wide canyon openings which provides a nice contrast to the tighter slots. We stopped several times to drink water take photos and simply appreciate the silence of the desert. I recommend starting early because the sun becomes intense and shade is limited. Proper shoes plenty of water and some snacks made our outing even better. Parking was easy and the signage was clear enough for us to stay confidently on route. By the time we returned to the car we felt tired in the best possible way. It is a fantastic trail that blends beauty challenge and joy. I will return."

"Fun ladders, great slot canyon stretch! Beautiful views at the top of the canyon. Walk back is hot if in midday sun. The main wash is sandy and not compact. So a little more labor some than regular hiking. But that only for the last half of the loop on the return and the little stretch at the beginning up to ladder canyon."

"Amazing trail. Moderate. Need hiking boots, water, and I found it helpful to bring my poles and some snacks for a break at the top. In the end, we hiked almost 5.2 miles, and ~950 ft rec change. We are midwesterners in our 60’s and took about 3.25 hrs, including a lunch break at the top. Be sure to download the trail ahead of time, as our signal was spotty until the top. The ladders that you have to climb are pretty well secured- and you will go thru slots, and do some scrambling. It’s easiest to do the loop part of the trail in a clockwise direction- so you will end up climbing the ladders instead of descending, and the second half of the hike will be flat and sandy thru the painted canyon. Oh, and we saw a tarantula out walking the trail, too!"

Navigating the Ladder Canyon Trail
As you climb higher, the slot canyon opens up, offering stunning views of the surrounding desert landscape. The trail continues to a ridge, where rock arrows often guide hikers. The return journey typically takes you back through the wider Painted Canyon wash. It's recommended to hike the loop clockwise, so you ascend the ladders rather than descend them, and the second half of the hike is the flatter, sandy wash.
Key features include the dramatic sandstone walls, the thrill of climbing the ladders, and the expansive views from the ridge. Be prepared for sandy terrain, which can be more labor-intensive than compact trails. The contrast between the narrow, shaded slot canyon and the wide, sun-drenched washes is a defining characteristic of this hike.
Vehicle and Road Considerations
High-clearance vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, are strongly recommended. These vehicles are better equipped to navigate the uneven surfaces, potential ruts, and rocky sections, significantly reducing the risk of getting stuck or damaging your car. While some determined drivers in smaller cars have made it, it often involves slow, cautious driving and a higher risk of tire damage or undercarriage scraping.
It's always a good idea to check recent road conditions before heading out, as the road can change after rain or with natural erosion. If you're unsure about your vehicle's capabilities, consider carpooling with someone who has a suitable vehicle or looking into local tour operators who offer transportation to the trailhead.
Best Practices for a Safe and Enjoyable Hike
Hydration is paramount. Carry more water than you think you'll need, especially during warmer months. Dehydration can set in quickly in the desert environment. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support and traction are essential for navigating the sandy washes, scrambling over rocks, and climbing the ladders safely.
Download an offline map of the area before you arrive, as cell service is unreliable. This will help you stay on track, especially on the ridge section. Finally, pack snacks to keep your energy levels up, and be prepared for a moderate level of physical exertion.
