What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking views and the unique experience of reaching the summit of Pikes Peak, whether by car or cog railway. The paved highway and improved visitor center are noted positives. However, some mention the challenges of altitude sickness and the potential for unpredictable weather, even in summer.
"Amazing and crazy drive up to the peak. The drive down was even crazier. There is basically no guardrail! Every time we turned, there was another great view. The observatory at the peak was great and you can find donuts at the gift shop. They are overpriced but good. It was a little difficult for us during our visit because of the altitude but it was still great. It's windy so bring a jacket during the colder months. Be sure to use the lower gears while descending so that your brakes don't burn out. There's a check point that checks the brake temperature, so you don't end up on the evening news.
So awesome!"

"Cool place to visit, literally, was 21 degrees with a windchill of zero, mid October.
Saw several reviews brag about the donuts. My opinion is they were okay, but nothing special.
Has numerous historical and geographic layouts to view and read. Very interesting.
Took the cog railcar up. Can highly recommend that."
MITCH CLINKENBEARD
"What an amazing drive! I recommend starting early in the morning and checking the weather. I bought our tickets online the day before and checking in at the ranger station at the start was easy. Be sure to get gas and prepare for huge elevation gains. The road is well maintained for August. All of the ranger throughout the park are excellent."

Navigating Pikes Peak: Drive vs. Train
The Pikes Peak Cog Railway provides a more relaxed and historic experience. This iconic train journey takes you directly to the summit, allowing you to soak in the scenery without the stress of driving. It's an excellent option for families, those less comfortable with heights, or anyone seeking a classic mountain adventure. Tickets are in high demand, so booking well in advance is crucial.
Both options offer unparalleled access to the summit and its stunning vistas. Consider your comfort level with driving, desire for flexibility, and interest in historical experiences when making your choice.
Conquering the Altitude: Tips for Visitors
Pacing yourself is also crucial. Avoid strenuous activity immediately upon arrival at the summit. Take breaks, sit down, and allow your body to adjust to the thinner air. If you have pre-existing health conditions, especially respiratory or cardiovascular issues, consult your doctor before visiting. Many visitors find that taking their time on the drive down and stopping at various points helps them acclimatize gradually.
For those planning to climb Pikes Peak via hiking or running, acclimatization is even more critical. The Pikes Peak Marathon, for instance, requires significant preparation for the extreme elevation gain. Even if you're just visiting the summit, being prepared for the altitude will significantly enhance your experience and enjoyment of this magnificent mountain.
The Famous Pikes Peak Donuts
While the donuts are a simple pleasure, their popularity means the cafe line can be long, especially during peak hours. However, many reviews suggest the line moves quickly, and the wait is often considered worthwhile for this unique mountain delicacy. Trying these donuts is a quintessential Pikes Peak experience that adds a sweet memory to your visit.
