Sandia Man Cave also known as Sandia Cave. This trail was beautiful and short however it was snow packed and icy due to it being that time of year, so be careful. I would recommend getting an early start as the road leading up to the trailhead is very narrow and rough. Take it nice and slow. The unique staircase leads to the Cave. Don’t look down if you are scared of heights. I didn’t go too far i...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique experience of Sandia Man Cave, highlighting the thrilling spiral staircase and the scenic hike. It's praised as a free, accessible adventure with historical intrigue, though some note the road to the trailhead can be rough and deeper cave exploration requires equipment. TikTokReddit+1

"Take a hike as they say...pretty close to ABQ...maybe 30-45 minutes depending on your location. It's a couple miles of rough road to the parking area...
an SUV or other higher clearance vehicles is recommended but if you careful maybe an Accord could make it. From the parking area it's an easy ~.5 mile hike to the spiral staircase. If you have a fear of heights this may not be the hike for you...pretty cool, great views and if you are prepared and have an inner spelunker there's more to explore in the cave."

Michael Huber

"Ok, let's cover the route to the cave first... this is an unimproved mountain road.. It is rough and there are a couple larger rocks that stick out in the road, but you can go around them. You do not need a 4x4 or a high clearance vehicle to get out to the cave. As my pictures will show, mini vans, Kia Soul, large Mercury sedan were out there.. Cars will probably go no faster than 5mph getting out there... trucks, 4x4 maybe 10-15... today was clear and dry... the pictures of random vehicles , is just to show you that I was not lying and that these are the vehicles that were out there out there .....if its raining or has just rained, this road will be a challenge for everyone.
Ok now the cave....the trail is good , gentle slope, lots of flat areas in the 1/2mi hike up. Lots of shaded areas, places to sit ( natural rock not benches to rest if needed). Take water please!!!
Its not diffucult... you will sweat a little... but I saw folks in flip flops at the cave, I saw a little girl about 4 years old... folks of various ages and sizes... I am old and overweight and I made it relatively easy...
The cave goes back 30 feet or so, then. Small wall and then darkness..... if you care to explore passed the small wall, bring headlamps, flashlights.... the cell phone light doesn't help... bring water.
There are several picnic areas on the road to the cave, just pull off and have a groovy time!
This trail really is easy and when you are about half way up from the parking lot, you can see the stairs to the cave, so that will motivate you if you want to quit..
This was a good day"

tom smith

"Total trail was only 1 mile total. Easy hike. You can go further into the cave but we didn’t have the equipment. However, as we were leaving we ran into a couple with hard hats and flashlights who planned to “go all the way”."
