What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking spectacle of the Balloon Fiesta, with the Dawn Patrol and Mass Ascension being major highlights. The event is generally well-organized, and the food vendors offer a good variety. However, parking and traffic management are frequently cited as significant drawbacks, often described as a 'disaster' or 'pain in the neck.'
"Came for a 2 day concert for the Smoke Show (Pitbull/Blake Shelton.) Parking was a disaster at the end of the event. If you do not park in the VIP parking, be prepared to walk a good distance through a torn up parking lot and through grass. Inside, the venue was really clean and well organized. Staff were friendly. Vendors had delicious food. The water tanks in the corners of the park were a lifesaver. Thank you for offering that!"

"Went to celebrate my daughters birthday and also the 4th of July. It's always a great place to enjoy some entertainment and spend time with your family. Parking is always a pain in the neck. I wish the city would do a better job of getting in and out of the balloon fiesta. It doesn't matter the entertainment the Parking always sucks!😤"
Joseph Lucero
"At first, hearing about the balloon fiesta from the locals…it seemed like a mixed bag regarding how they felt about the event. Some love it and go every year, others don’t like all the outsiders coming…I am glad that we listened to the most important information from both parties…you should go at least once! We did and enjoyed the dawn patrol and lift off! Everyone should go once if you are in the south western United States!"

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The most recommended way to reach Balloon Fiesta Park is by using the official Park & Ride service. This helps avoid the significant traffic congestion that can occur around the park. Multiple Park & Ride locations are available, offering a convenient shuttle service directly to the fiesta grounds. Driving directly to the park is an option, but be prepared for potential delays and a longer walk from parking areas if not using VIP parking.
For the best experience, especially for the Dawn Patrol and mass ascensions, arriving very early is crucial. Many visitors suggest leaving your accommodation by 4:30 or 5:00 AM to ensure you get a good spot and avoid the worst of the traffic.
While the Park & Ride is the primary recommended public transit option, local bus routes may also serve the general area of Balloon Fiesta Park. It's advisable to check with the local transit authority for the most up-to-date routes and schedules during the event.
Parking at Balloon Fiesta Park can be challenging. General parking is available but can involve a significant walk and may require cash payment. VIP parking options are also available for a higher fee, offering closer access. Many visitors opt for the Park & Ride to bypass parking issues altogether.
Parking costs can vary, but expect to pay around $20 in cash for general parking. VIP parking will be more expensive. The Park & Ride service often includes the shuttle fare in the ticket price, making it a cost-effective and less stressful option.

📸 📸 Photography
For iconic shots, position yourself on the field during the mass ascensions to capture the balloons inflating and lifting off. The Balloon Glow offers stunning opportunities for night photography. Consider elevated positions or areas with clear views of the Sandia Mountains as a backdrop.
A versatile lens, such as a 24-70mm or 70-200mm, is ideal for capturing both wide-angle views of the park and close-ups of the balloons. A tripod can be helpful for low-light conditions during the Balloon Glow, but be mindful of crowds.
Drone usage is typically restricted during the Balloon Fiesta for safety reasons, to avoid interfering with balloon operations. Always check the official event rules and regulations regarding drone photography.
The 'golden hours' – shortly after sunrise for the mass ascensions and during the Balloon Glow in the evening – offer the most dramatic and beautiful lighting for photography.
Experiment with different angles and perspectives. Try capturing the balloons reflecting in puddles after rain, or frame them against unique architectural elements of the park. Getting closer to the inflation process can also yield interesting shots.
🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining
Balloon Fiesta Park hosts a wide array of food vendors offering everything from classic fair food like corn dogs and funnel cakes to local New Mexican specialties such as breakfast burritos and green chile stew. You'll find options to satisfy diverse tastes.
While specific options can vary by vendor, many food stalls offer vegetarian choices like corn on the cob, fries, and some salads. Vegan options might be more limited but can sometimes be found, especially with customizable dishes. It's best to inquire directly with vendors.
Bringing an empty, reusable water bottle is often allowed, and there are typically water stations available to refill it. This is a great way to stay hydrated and reduce waste.
Don't miss out on authentic New Mexican cuisine! Look for breakfast burritos smothered in red or green chile, sopapillas (fried dough often served with honey), and Frito pie. The local chile is a highlight!
Balloon Fiesta Park primarily operates with a wide variety of food trucks and concession stands. While there might be some designated seating areas, formal sit-down restaurants are not typically a feature of the event.

Navigating Parking and Transportation
If you choose to drive directly to the park, be prepared for potential delays and a considerable walk from the parking lots to the main event area, especially if you haven't secured VIP parking. Parking fees are typically around $20 in cash for general parking, so have it ready. Some visitors have found success booking RV spots on the grounds through specialized services, which can offer a unique experience with great views.
For those looking for a more relaxed approach, consider ride-sharing services, though surge pricing can be a factor during peak times. Regardless of your chosen method, planning your transportation in advance is key to a stress-free visit to the Balloon Fiesta Park.
Experiencing the Balloon Glow
This event offers a unique photographic opportunity, as the glowing balloons create a magical ambiance. It's a more relaxed experience compared to the morning mass ascensions, allowing visitors to stroll around the park, enjoy the illuminated balloons, and often listen to live music. While weather can sometimes impact the Glow, it's a highly anticipated part of the fiesta for many.
To make the most of the Balloon Glow, check the official schedule for specific dates and times, as it usually occurs on select evenings. Arriving a bit before sunset allows you to witness the transition from twilight to full darkness, enhancing the visual impact of the glowing balloons.
A Photographer's Paradise
For unique perspectives, consider capturing the balloons from different vantage points within the park. Wide-angle lenses are excellent for showcasing the vastness of the event, while telephoto lenses can isolate individual balloons or capture details of their designs. The Balloon Glow offers a magical opportunity for night photography, with the illuminated balloons creating a surreal and vibrant scene.
Remember to pack extra batteries and memory cards, as you'll likely be taking a lot of photos. Early morning and late evening light, known as the 'golden hours,' provide the most dramatic and beautiful lighting conditions. Be prepared for crowds, especially during popular events, and always be mindful of other photographers and attendees.
