Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently rave about Proxy Falls, describing it as a magical, otherworldly experience that lives up to the hype. The stunning cascades and unique volcanic landscape are major highlights, making it a must-see in Oregon. Some note the trail can be challenging with loose terrain and fallen trees, and advise on preparedness for weather and fees.

"Absolutely gorgeous hike and sight seeing in central Oregon near the sisters. There's some great trails here that are rather well maintained given the remote area. The trails range from easy to moderate in some areas, particularly the descent down to the base of lower Proxy falls is a bit difficult. There are a number of other attractions in the area including other falls, the national forest and some hot springs but this is a highly recommended visit for and road trip going through the area.
There is a fee station, which was not working when I visited so I ended up paying online. It's $5 per vehicle per day. Due to the remote location, elevation gain, and primitive trails I would caution people with mobility issues to carefully research the trail, and keep in mind nearby Sahalis Falls has much easier access for another beautiful nearby waterfall!"

"10/10 experience!! Feels like you are in another world! A little slippery during winter and a few bugs during summer…. But the scenery/experience/vibe makes it 1000000000% worth it!!! It’s so magical it doesn’t even feel real!
🤯😱😍"

"Stunning falls!!! Every time I visit, I am completely filled with awe. The hike itself is a very easy loop. You can hike down to the lower falls and/or the upper falls (I recommend both!) for a bit more adventure. You'll find yourself crossing, ducking under and climbing fallen trees. You can get right up to the falls. Expect it to be a slow and winding drive up the MacKenzie pass. You will need a NW park pass, no wilderness passes required and there's a station at the trailhead if you forget. Don't forget bug spray!"

The Volcanic Landscape of Proxy Falls

Proxy Falls is situated within a fascinating lava field created by ancient volcanic activity from the Cascade Range. This rugged terrain, composed of volcanic pumice stone, gives the area an otherworldly and surreal feel. Hikers will traverse this unique landscape, with loose rock and sandy sections contributing to the trail's character. TikTokInstagram

The geological history of the area is evident in every step, making the hike itself an exploration of Oregon's powerful natural forces. The porous nature of the lava rock is even responsible for the unique behavior of Lower Proxy Falls, where the water seeps into the ground rather than forming a traditional riverbed. TikTok

This dramatic backdrop is a significant part of what makes Proxy Falls so memorable and visually striking, setting it apart from more conventional waterfall destinations. It’s a landscape that truly feels like stepping onto another planet. Instagram

Navigating the Proxy Falls Trail

The Proxy Falls hike is a loop trail, typically around 1.6 to 1.8 miles, and is generally rated as easy to moderate. However, the trail presents some unique challenges. Visitors often describe the path as being covered in volcanic rock and sandy sections that can be slippery and sometimes slide underfoot. InstagramReddit

For those venturing to the base of Lower Proxy Falls, expect a more adventurous descent. This may involve scrambling over rocks, ducking under fallen trees, and climbing over obstacles. While rewarding, this section requires a bit more agility and caution. InstagramReddit

It's recommended to wear sturdy hiking boots with good traction. Taking your time and being mindful of your footing will ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience. The effort is widely considered worth it for the spectacular views of the falls. InstagramReddit

Understanding the Falls: Upper vs. Lower

Proxy Falls is actually comprised of two distinct waterfalls: Upper Proxy Falls and Lower Proxy Falls. While both are beautiful, they offer different experiences. Upper Proxy Falls is often described as elegant, with water gently cascading over moss-covered cliffs. TikTok

Lower Proxy Falls is the more dramatic and iconic of the two, plunging an impressive 226 feet into a gaping canyon. This is the waterfall that truly captivates visitors with its sheer power and the unique way its water disappears into the porous lava rock below. TikTokInstagram

Many visitors recommend visiting both falls to fully appreciate the diversity of the area. The trail loop provides access to both, allowing hikers to experience the contrasting beauty of these natural wonders. Reddit
