Advice needed. **Pfeiffer State Park Area or Ragged Point?
I am going to be in Big Sur in December for my birthday - driving down from the Bay Area - I can't decide whether to stay around Pfeiffer State Park or Ragged Point. Is Ragged Point too far for a relaxed day's drive? Google says 3 hours, I know it'll be more like 5…

The hike down to the beach is steep and can be muddy. Wear sturdy shoes! :athletic_shoe:

Reviews Summary

The trail to the waterfall and black sand beach is a unique highlight, though its steepness is noted. Some find it a convenient and scenic place to rest and refuel during their drive.
"Nice place to stop for some great photos of the California coast! There's a steep trail down to the beach or a trail out to the point that has a great overlook. There's also a restaurant and coffee shop here."
Curtis Lannom
"So much to do at this stop on HWY 1. There is a restaurant, breathtaking views of mountains, the ocean, walk through a little forest, and you can even hike down some stairs to see a waterfall and go on the beach. Highway 1 is closed at some parts until June so Ragged Point is one of the last stops. Then you have to turn around and take the 101 to continue to Big Sur. But Ragged Point is definitely worth the stop!"
Nicole Mazzilli
"A must see stop on the Highway1. The highway1 itself is a very scenic drive all along the Pacific coast and Ragged point is one of them. It comes after Big Sur if driving southbound. You get to see the Ragged point Inn and that is the spot. There are couple of beautiful picturesque spots and a small trail (steps and some muddy road) down to the beach just behind the Ragged Point Inn. The trail is a series of steep switchbacks that lead down to a secluded black sand beach and large, cascading waterfall. One of the excellent view point on the Pacific coast."
