What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Petersen Rock Garden for its unique folk art, serene atmosphere, and the delightful surprise of its well-stocked gift shop. While some note the grounds appear a bit weathered, the overall experience is described as peaceful, eccentric, and unforgettable, with the roaming peacocks adding a surreal charm.
"Great experience! My toddler and family enjoyed the entire time here. Initially driving in, it looks ran down but once you start walking around it is very serene and peaceful. Initially I thought it would be a quick in and out trip but we ended up taking over 2 hours here, although could be completed way quicker. We got lots of fun photos and enjoyed feeding the peacocks and visiting the gift shop. We almost missed the exhibit at the front of the property with water and islands, so make sure to visit that side of the property since it isn't well marked. Must see stop when visiting the area. Dog and toddler friendly!"

"If you like roadside attractions—the kind that spring from one person’s sheer vision, diligence, and obsession—then Peterson Rock Garden is an absolute must-see.
This place is a folk art fever dream come to life: hand-built miniature castles, bridges, and patriotic monuments, all crafted from lava rock, agate, petrified wood, and glass. It’s eccentric, a little weathered, and absolutely unforgettable.
But here’s the real hidden gem: the gift shop. Calling it a treasure trove doesn’t do it justice. We found genuine showpiece items for our home at unbelievable prices—pieces we’d expect to see in a curated boutique for triple the cost. On top of that, the staff gave us a mini history lesson about the garden’s creator and the surrounding area while we browsed. It was one of those moments where you go in expecting a kitschy stop and leave with a story, a haul of amazing finds, and a greater appreciation for the passion behind the place.
A quick heads-up: if you hear what sounds like a mythical creature howling through the trees, don’t panic—you’re not being hunted. That’s just one of the overly dramatic peacocks voicing his displeasure at… who knows what. There are peacocks all over the grounds, strutting freely and occasionally screaming like something out of Jurassic Park. It’s weird, wonderful, and totally on brand for a place like this.
Highly recommend taking the detour. You won’t regret it."

"Between Redmond and Bend, Petersen Rock Garden was a quiet oasis in Central Oregon. Expansive views framed the eccentric rock structures, each one steeped in local charm. Peacocks roamed freely, perching on stonework and adding bursts of color and life. Their presence made the garden feel surreal—an unexpected, enchanting escape in the high desert.
The on your honor payment system, with a recommended $10 per adult and older child is an appropriate method to support Petersen Rock Garden and adds to the charm. Please be sure to support Petersen Rock Garden so it may last for another 100 years."
