Last week the summer students enjoyed a field trip to Rockland, Maine. We went to the Sail, Power and Steam Museum where we got a personal story time from the founder Captain Jim Sharp and then spent the afternoon exploring the coast, getting ice cream and just avoiding the rain. ☀️⛵️🌊 #Bowdoin #museum #Arctic #summer #FieldTrip #Rockland

The passion of founder Captain Jim Sharp and the extensive, well-curated collections are frequently highlighted as major draws. "A True Maritime Museum—Engaging and Memorable

We had a wonderful visit at this authentic maritime museum. The gentleman who greeted us was incredibly informative and clearly passionate about the history of the area. I believe he mentioned that his family once worked at the shipyard before the fire many years ago, which added a personal layer to the stories he shared.

Although I don’t recall his name and didn’t see him listed on the museum’s website, his knowledge and storytelling made a lasting impression. He spoke in depth about local maritime history and the lime industry, and his insights truly brought the past to life. It felt like stepping back in time through his words.

This museum offers a rich, hands-on experience that’s deeply rooted in the community. It’s well worth the visit for anyone interested in Maine’s maritime heritage."

"Amazing museum! We highly recommend. We did not leave enough time for this. There is a guided tour via video which contains fascinating information as told by the founder of the museum. This small museum is packed full of mostly nautical artifacts, but some steam engines as well."

Amy Hancock-Ronemus

"We didn’t plan to visit but after lunch at Jj’s hot dog cart (also highly recommend), the museum was right there and being a lifelong sailor a visit to this place was on my list. It far exceeded my expectations- room after room of treasures all grouped in a way that allows for a deep dive no matter which aspect of maritime life your after. The founder Jim Sharp was there and he himself is a museum piece! A treasure trove of stories and a history of working on boats. The place started filling up with musicians soon after we arrived and soon the perimeter of the conference room was lined with musicians and their instruments. In turn, they each played and sang a tune on fiddles, guitars, cellos, pianos! An awesome afternoon- I have to go back to finish my tour of the museum!"
