"The Salem Athenaeum was an unexpected gem discovered during our vacation in Salem. As we leisurely explored Ropes Mansion, we happened upon this remarkable architectural treasure. Stepping inside, we were delighted to immerse ourselves in the ambiance of this charming, old English-style library, steeped in historical significance.

Our visit allowed us to view the upstairs, explore the well-preserved living quarters, and venture into the tranquil backyard. The prospect of selecting a book and indulging in a leisurely read amidst the serene outdoor setting was truly inviting.

In essence, the Salem Athenaeum provides a delightful and inviting haven for those seeking a welcoming and historically rich environment. It is a place where one can truly feel at home while experiencing a piece of history."

"I'm a Salem resident and I am on a mission to tour all the local attractions AND places of relevance.

About this one:

The Salem Athenaeum is a "hidden gem" that I have discovered only very recently after the recommendation of a neighbor. It's a library + a place for exhibits and seminars/workshops/events.

What it is:

The Salem Athenaeum is an open to the public (everyone can get in and use it), independent, membership library located in the heart of the city, right on Essex Street and in the McIntire District, inside an elegant building from the beginning of the 1900s. On their website you can read the story of how the Athenaeum evolved from both the Social Library created in 1760 and the Salem Philosophical Library in 1781.

The Athenaeum offers a few amenities.
First of all, the first room on the right after you enter the building hosts temporary exhibitions which are free to the public. At the time of my visits (2023), the Athenaeum is hosting an exquisite little exhibit about fashion illustrations (see pictures).
Then, the library itself consists of two floors filled with book collections that are accessible to everyone. Basically, if you are not a member, you can read but you can't bring books home. Which is still a pretty good deal.
Lastly, the property includes this truly enchanting, cozy garden on the back with benches and chairs where one can read, study or relax. It is accessible from the first floor of the building (not from the outside)

If you are visiting Salem, chances are that you are going to walk in front of this building not knowing what's inside or if it's worth getting in. I say, it is worth a visit. As I mentioned, the exhibition that I saw was charmingly put together and very interesting. It is small, just one room, but still makes a nice 10/15 minutes visit. It's free.

If you are like me, you might feel a little intimidated by the building and getting in, but I can guarantee there is nothing intimidating or pompous while you get inside 😊 Again, the exhibit is the first room on the right, you get in, you enjoy the display, you get out, easy-peasy.

If you are a resident, the Athenaeum offers a great place to study and read inside an inspiring, historical setting (you don't have to be a Salem resident to use it, I am just writing this with the assumption that the library is more of use for a resident. As a visitor, you can definitely use the library too).

Personally, I am a big fan of their collection of books about Salem that they keep on the shelves of the same room that they use for exhibitions, on the left of the door.

PROs
(Salem visitor)
Free, inspired small exhibitions inside an elegant, picture-worthy venue. On the same street of all the shops, of the Witch House, Ropes Mansion and more. Pictures allowed.
(Salem resident)
A great, cozy, never crowded library with a lovely garden in the back if you prefer to read/study outdoors.

The Athenaeum is open all year round (some exceptions for holidays etc, so please still check their calendar - check their calendar also for events and seminars).

CONs
Just be aware that the building is not wheelchair accessible."

"Cute little museum / library of very old books and fairy tales. Free!"
