Reviews Summary

Visitors praise St. Peter's Episcopal Church for its historical significance, striking architecture, and the knowledgeable guides during tours. The connection to local history, including the Salem Witch Trials, and the presence of the oldest church bells in the US are frequently highlighted as fascinating aspects. However, access to the interior can be limited, often requiring visits during specific event days.

"I'm a Salem resident and I am on a mission to tour all the local attractions AND historical places.

About this one:

This historical church was open for guided tours because of the Trails and Sails Days (two weeks of free events in the North Shore) so I jumped on the opportunity to tour it and learn about its history! I believe they offer tours also during the Salem Ancestry Days and possibly during other local special events.

This is a striking, very iconic building hard to miss when visiting Salem. The current, Gothic revival structure was built in 1833, replacing the original yellow, wooden one from 1733. I was surprised to discover that it was Philip English who, back then, bought the land to build the church. If you are familiar with the Salem Witch Trials, his name would sound familiar too as he - and his wife - were two of the accused, and the story of what happened to them and how they escaped the trials is very unique. They were Anglicans and this was originally an Anglican church.

The tour was about half hour long, with Jill, who was not only extremely knowledgeable but also very warm and welcoming and passionate about the St. Peter’s/San Pedro church community. We walked around the pews, along the walls, where several historical artifacts are on display. It was interesting to learn also about the bells - oldest church bells in the US! - and the pew of the Nathaniel Bowditch family.

If you are interested in taking a peek at the building inside, it is open during worship hours. For tours, you should check into schedules of special, seasonal events here in Salem."

"Have to give this 5 stars because of its beautiful state of preservation. Unfortunately not open on the day I visited. Some beautiful 17th century gravestones outside and well tended area to rear."
