Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Shelter Island's beautiful bay views, ample free parking, and relaxed atmosphere, making it a pleasant spot for walks and dining. Some note that parking can be challenging during major events, and while generally safe, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings.
"Mom and I have Portuguese roots and I wanted to surprise her to see some of our roots in history in San Diego County. I took her to Shelter Island.
There is a very large and life like statue of Portuguese fishermen to share on display the fact that Portuguese culture was an early settlement in San Diego. They brought families and generations to the area and helped create a fishery as a way of life. The history is in the dedication we saw on a pleasant walkway. I was able to easily cruise mom in her wheelchair without any difficulty. There is a pier as well. I hear it is a great place to come see fireworks on 4th of July, but you’d have to come early for parking. There is a lot of parking, but it fills quickly for such a social event."
