"Me and my son really enjoyed this trail! I honestly loved it! It's not a super long trail and it's beautiful from start to finish there's a bunch of beautiful flowers the trees you walk through are beautiful part of the trail is tons and tons of shells (my son loved looking at them of course he had a handful that he needed to take) the dunes were beautiful, you get a little bit of everything when walking here. I will say the sand could be a little tuff for some people depending on what kind of shoes someone wears. But I highly recommend checking this place out we will definitely be back next year!"

"It's a nice walking/hike. It's beautiful.
The sand can be difficult for some folks. You may get winded walking through the sand. My family handled the hike well.
I recommend wearing tennis shoes or boots. I was in sandles and ended up walking barefoot through the sandy parts. But be careful because there can be sharp pieces of shells. Otherwise, it's a nice one mile loop through nature. It's worth it!"

"Nice walking trail with benches to stop and rest and take pictures 😃"

The Rarity and Formation of Coastal Dune Lakes
The defining characteristic of these lakes is their connection to the Gulf of Mexico. Periodically, when the water level in the lake rises sufficiently, it carves a channel through the sand dunes, creating an 'outfall' into the ocean. This process is dynamic and can change the lake's salinity and water color, creating a fascinating interplay between freshwater and saltwater environments. The tea-colored waters of the dune lakes, often a result of tannins from decaying vegetation, contrast beautifully with the emerald hues of the Gulf.
This unique formation and periodic connection to the sea create a fragile and specialized ecosystem. The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance plays a crucial role in studying and preserving these rare natural resources, highlighting their ecological significance and the importance of responsible visitation.
Exploring the Trails and Natural Beauty
As you traverse these trails, you'll encounter diverse plant life adapted to the coastal environment. The views can open up dramatically, offering breathtaking panoramas of the lakes themselves, like Western Lake, and their proximity to the Gulf. Benches are often strategically placed along these routes, inviting visitors to pause, rest, and soak in the tranquil atmosphere. The presence of shells on the trails is also a common sight, a small detail that adds to the natural charm and can be a delight for children.
Beyond hiking, the calm waters of the dune lakes are perfect for activities like paddleboarding and kayaking. This allows for a different perspective, letting you glide across the surface and appreciate the unique colors and the surrounding landscape from the water.
