What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Ballard Bridge is appreciated for its structural presence and the unique spectacle of its drawbridge operations, offering picturesque views, especially at sunset. However, many users find the narrow lanes and sidewalks, coupled with unpredictable and lengthy delays from bridge openings, to be significant drawbacks.
"I love this bridge. a structural work of art that is perfect for watching at the end of the dock, in fisherman's terminal. I always wait a little while for the draw bridge rise. would make a great painting if an artist decides to venture."
Derek Sexton
"They’ve got to improve on when they’re raising the draw bridge for marine vehicles. I understand they have the right of way but I live 2 mins from the bridge and less than 5 minutes from my destination. I’ve been sitting on this bridge for about an hour, stuck. People are crossing the yellow lines just to leave . This is ridiculous. Crazy part is I looked it up and they only raise the bridge for boats taller than 44 feet. That’s a big ass boat right ? But I don’t see no damn boat ! I been sitting here trynna get across the bridge to get my lunch and I’ve been stopped for a non existent boat"
Kimora Barnes
"someday they'll make it great again and it'll have a streetcar on it or a wider path for not cars. or that next 8+ earthquake will demolish it in spite of sdot attempts to prevent. marine vessels have priority so it's opening at random times....hey amtrak has priority on rail but that doesn't stop BNSF/UP/NS/CSX trains to voilate federal law and delay passenger rail does it?
better to have it than not, but just barely. a boat ferry might be better."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Understanding Drawbridge Operations
Travelers should be aware that marine traffic has priority. While some users have expressed frustration with perceived non-existent boat traffic causing delays, the system is designed to accommodate larger vessels. Some have suggested that a boat ferry might be a more efficient alternative for crossing, highlighting the ongoing challenges with the current drawbridge system for road users.
For those interested in witnessing the drawbridge in action, it's a unique spectacle. Observing the massive structure lift and lower can be quite impressive, offering a glimpse into Seattle's maritime life.
Cycling and Pedestrian Safety
Seattle's Department of Transportation (SDOT) has sought public input on improving bike crossings, indicating an awareness of the issues. If you are a cyclist or pedestrian who uses the bridge, participating in surveys and providing feedback to SDOT is encouraged to help advocate for safer infrastructure.
While the bridge offers views, the narrowness and absence of railings on the sidewalks can make walking or cycling a nerve-wracking experience, especially with speeding cars nearby. Travelers should exercise extreme caution if choosing to cross on foot or by bike.
The Quirky Seattle Troll
The troll's location under the bridge was intentional, serving a dual purpose. The large concrete walls were built to prevent people from jumping down to offer themselves to the troll, and instead, they are directed to use the stairs. It's a fun and unexpected discovery for visitors exploring the area around the bridge.
Many visitors enjoy taking photos with the troll, making it a popular, albeit unusual, stop for those exploring Ballard. It's a testament to Seattle's creative spirit and adds a touch of playful charm to the urban landscape.
