What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Spartanburg Amtrak Station offers a functional, albeit basic, transit point. While train delays are common and station amenities are minimal with inconsistent waiting room access, travelers appreciate the well-lit and relatively safe surroundings, proximity to dining, and the occasional weekend museum. It's a stop for the journey, not a destination in itself.
"Slept in the waiting room one night leaving when visiting my Girlfriend's family. Honestly, a reflective and pleasant all-nighter. Had a good smoke, watched some shows on my phone, and tried not to fall asleep."

"For Amtrak, this is a decent station. You may see many complaints about the on-time performance of the Amtrak Crescent (New York City - New Orleans), the sketchiness of the surrounding area, or state of the station. I am here to address all of these issues, starting with the on-time performance. Amtrak rents out these rails, and every rail across the US (apart from all electrified portions of rail in the Northeast Corridor from Washington D.C. to New York City). Because of this, they are often delayed by the slower freight trains, since they take priority (the legality of freight priority is highly debated; please compile your own research before riding with Amtrak). I understand why people are frustrated at Amtrak, but 95% of the time, it is completely out of their control! Second issue is the sketchiness of the surrounding area. Personally, this station is in a good place. There is a restaurant (Chef Ae’s) just around the corner, the police station is just a block away, the hospital a short drive away, and the parking is plentiful. The station is well lit, so I do not understand why people think it is unsafe, especially compared to Gastonia Amtrak Station. As for the condition of the station, it is probably a bit outdated, but seeing as Amtrak has received less funding in its entire life than just one year of funding for the US highway program, we should be a bit forgiving. Besides, in the daytime on the weekends, a small museum is open (which I have reviewed), making the fact that the station is outdated less concerning. I believe that was all the issues, so please choose use this information that I have given you to take Amtrak with a new and improved perspective!"

"I remember that exact location, in 1976, we partly moved down south from New Jersey. I visited this location before I returned back up to New Jersey, as I walked around memories flooded my thoughts, the station, the restaurant behind it, and the other restaurant right across from the other restaurant behind the train station. Wonderful memories, my father would take the train to arrive here mostly in the middle of the night, I would as a child run along to keep up until the train disappeared beyond the overpass the train would go through."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Confirm waiting room access before arriving, especially with young children, to avoid waiting outside in inclement weather. Since there are no staff or ticket booths, ensure all travel arrangements are finalized in advance. The nearby restaurant offers a convenient option for a meal before or after the journey.
💰 Budget Travelers
Be aware that the waiting room access can be unreliable, so factor in potential outdoor waiting time. This means dressing appropriately for the weather is essential. The main expense will be the train ticket itself, so booking in advance and looking for deals on the Amtrak website is recommended.

Understanding Amtrak Travel from Spartanburg
Despite potential delays, the station is situated in a location that reviewers find surprisingly practical. It's described as well-lit and near essential services, including a restaurant (Chef Ae's) and the local police station, contributing to a sense of security. This contrasts with perceptions of sketchiness that some might associate with train stations in general.
The station's facilities are basic. The waiting room is small, and there are no operational booths or employees on-site. This means passengers should be prepared for self-sufficiency, with tickets likely needing to be booked in advance. However, on weekend days, a small museum operates within the station, offering a brief cultural interlude for those waiting.
Station Amenities and Accessibility
Crucially, there are no operational booths or employees present at the station. This means passengers cannot purchase tickets on-site, nor can they seek immediate assistance. Travelers are advised to book their Amtrak tickets in advance through the Amtrak website or app. The lack of staff also means that information regarding train status or station access must be sought through other channels.
While the station itself is basic, its location offers some advantages. It's situated in a well-lit area, and nearby amenities include a restaurant. The proximity to the police station also adds a layer of perceived safety. For those traveling on weekends, the presence of a small museum within the station provides a unique, albeit limited, activity while waiting for a train.
