Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the strenuous but incredibly rewarding hike up Spencer Trail, offering spectacular, less-crowded views of the Colorado River and unique horseshoe bends. While the steepness and loose terrain are challenging, most agree the breathtaking panoramas are well worth the effort. However, the lack of shade and intense desert sun require significant preparation, with many warning about the need for ample water and sturdy footwear. InstagramReddit

"A strenuous and fun trail with a very rewarding view. My husband and I are not professional hikers, we are from the prairies of Missouri if that helps paint a picture, but we are active.

It took us one hour and twenty minutes to reach the peak stopping occasionally for a breather but not for photos. There’s a few stretches that are flat and easy but it’s majorly a climb. It climbs 1,700 feet in less than a mile.

The terrain is unforgiving as it it sand and loose rock for many of the cut backs. The closer you get to the stop the steeper some of the steps become.

But if you’re able it’s absolutely a must do. We’re not big hiking pole users but because the sand on the rock is so slick I would recommend them for this hike.

Once at the top make sure you cross the rim to the other canyon which overlooks Page, the proper Horseshoe Canyon in the distance and your own private horseshoe bend below.

You can seethe Colorado rivers veins cut through the land into the Grand Canyon off in the distance.

It took us about 45 minutes to get back down. I did fall once because of sandy rocks.

Our calves are still burning a day later but we ar every happy to have done it! WORTH IT"

"A five mile up and down strenuous, but spectacular, inspiring, hike. Initially it looks easy, but gets real tough really fast, you'll climb 1,500 feet in under a mile. Once you get past halfway, you are on loose gravel and soft sand type narrow walking area. If you get to the top, the views are truly incredible. At the top walk over to the other side, around 100 meters, and you'll see deep cliffs and the Colorado River with some more amazing bends. Take plenty of water, and some snacks as the two hour up hike will leave you hungry."

Mini Rag

"Very steep with loose sand and loose rock to slip and trip on. No shade anywhere and you’re facing into the sun the entire distance. Not really a safe trail to be on. Easy to slip, sprain an ankle, break your leg or forearm and be completely stranded."
