Best place to go gem mining?

I have family coming into town and they want to go gem mining. Everything I’m finding online sound like road side attractions where they give you little buckets already mined to go through and they’re looking for a more authentic experience. Is there anything like that in NC?…

Anyone familiar with Emerald Hollow Mine?

My 7 year old loves geology and we found this place and it looks fun. Didn’t know if anyone had any experience or advice.

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the North Carolina Museum of Minerals for its clear, informative exhibits on regional geology and its family-friendly interactive displays. It's highlighted as an excellent primer before visiting local gem mines and a valuable stop for Blue Ridge Parkway travelers seeking NPS passport stamps. Some reviews noted missing display items, which slightly detracted from the otherwise well-curated experience.

"We enjoyed our visit to the Museum of North Carolina Minerals—clear exhibits, helpful maps of the region’s geology, and a good primer before hitting local mines and sluices. It’s an easy, family-friendly stop with clean facilities and enough hands-on/interactive pieces to keep the visit engaging for 30–45 minutes.

One disappointment: a couple of displays were missing during our visit (two minerals that were labeled on the wall were gone, with marks where they had been mounted). It looked like they’d been pulled off—possibly removed for maintenance or, worst case, taken. Either way, it breaks the flow of the exhibit and stands out in an otherwise well-done space."

"Amazing small museum detailing the various minerals mined in the area. Its also a key visitor center on the blue ridge parkway if you are a NPS passport stamp collector. Surprisingly informative and scientifically accurate as well."

Howard Grimberg

"What a wonderful place! Worth a stop for the little ones and for any gem/mineral/rock enthusiasts. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and we even got to learn about possums!
There were no lines to get in and plenty of parking. Plus several things for the children to touch and explore in the show room.
It's a small museum but worth the visit nonetheless and there are great gem mines nearby to continue the fun."
