What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Madira Bickel Mound to be a surprisingly interesting and spiritual place, offering a glimpse into ancient history. The scenic drive and quiet ambiance are also highlighted as positives.
"This was a surprisingly interesting place. There are trees at top of the mound that shouldn’t be able to grow here. Leaves you wondering how they got here, and who lived here thousands of years ago."

"Cool little historical spot. Just a mound next to the road with some stairs. That's it."

"It was disappointing. Hernando De Soto the Spanish conquistador in 1839 was supposed to have visited the Indian village and met with the Chief Ucita. Speculation? You follow the trail and steps to the top and you are on exactly what they described, a non-descript mound. If you visit, read the interesting posting on the signs. Walking the trail and the steps is a disappointment. There IA a De Soto site or park in Bradenton this is a government park and is very informative and has a movie and interesting story of his disastrous trip throughout the south. It is worth the extra trip!"

Unearthing the Past: The Archaeology of Madira Bickel Mound
Archaeological research at the site aims to understand the lives, practices, and societal structures of the people who inhabited this area millennia ago. While the site itself is relatively small, its preservation is crucial for ongoing study and for educating the public about Florida's rich pre-Columbian history. The interpretive signage plays a vital role in bringing this history to life for visitors, explaining the mound's potential uses and the people who created it.
There is also historical speculation connecting the site to the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto, who is thought to have visited an Indian village and met with Chief Ucita in the area in 1839. While this connection is debated, it adds another dimension to the site's historical narrative. Visiting Madira Bickel Mound offers a chance to connect with these ancient stories and appreciate the enduring legacy of Florida's earliest inhabitants.
