What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Jefferson is a highly challenging and technical hike, often described as bordering on rock climbing. While strenuous, hikers are rewarded with spectacular 360-degree views of the surrounding Cascade Range. The trail requires careful navigation and is not suitable for inexperienced hikers, dogs, or children.
"Super hard/challenging hike. I would agree with assessment of hard-very hard. Many spots that are a 3-4 point touch, and have to slide down on my butt due to vertical decline, many times. Open-bald rock face. I would not encourage a inexperienced hiker to do this without more practice. Technical & challenging. I did about 6 miles, in and out, took be about 4.5 hours. Starts out pretty easy but once you get to the rock scrambles it's hard. I had to go very slow. Definitely look up once your above tree line and pay very close attention to faded yellow sashes and rock carins. Those rock carins kept me on track right to the top! Look ahead and you can mark your path by this method! You basically right along the outer rigde of the rock scramble for most of the way up. Once you see the actual top of Jefferson it looks alot closer than it is! Your fully exposed to sun so hats and sunblock advised. Saw a person with a dog on the trail, it was exhausted and not even close to the top, hind legs shaking and looked like it was on the brink of passing out. Owner was trying to encourage the dog telling it "you can do it", it's not a lack of motivation, this mountain is NOT appropriate for a dog or child. All sorts of other reviews telling you not to bring your dog, if you love your dog please skip Jefferson with your dog. That was a very sad sight, and they wearnt close to the top, the owner was clearly failing to recognize how exhausted the dog was...almost ruined my hike to have to witness. Little bits of snow and ice at the top but no need for my microspikes. I would not do hike if freezing temps overnight, too many rocks that are moist and will freeze so even with spikes it would be very dangerous. Anyway, overall very fun and enjoyable hike!!"

"Great hike and views of the Presedential Range. Hike took about 7 hours to complete, and the trail was steep. Definitely a tough, but rewarding hike. Ensure the summit is clear for the day and bring warm clothes with hiking gloves, it gets windy and the rocks are jagged towards the summit. Trail was well marked and not too long. Highly recommend."

"Jefferson is a strenuous hike especially in early snows. ( easier with more snow pack) be prepared. But it also offers 360 degree views and a great look at Washington and Adams. Very much worth the hike."
