Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Head of the Meadow Beach for its beautiful, expansive sandy shores and dramatic dune landscapes. The opportunity to see seals and the formation of tidal pools at low tide are highlights for families. Some note that facilities are primarily portapotties and the walk can be a bit long, but the overall natural beauty and wave action make it a favorite for many.

"Beautiful in early May on a cool day, 50° F. A huge empty parking lot on a short climb over a low dune to get to a wide open beach. Don't disregard the huge sign about the danger of great white sharks!"

Abigail Redman

"The beach is beautiful but seemed more crowded than the likes of Marconi, also lacked the fully functioning bathroom facilities, only having permanent portapotty structures. The walk through the dunes was relatively flat but a bit on the long side and not covered by any walking mats/planks. I wouldn’t drive this far again to go here if I was coming from south of wellfleet."

Caitlin S

"We camped at North of Highland for a week this August and absolutely loved our experience at Head of the Meadow beach (Truro Town Beach side). Even though the purple- dangerous marine life- flags flew each day we were there, we still felt comfortable swimming in the water closer to shore. Waves were breaking on or near the shore with a bit of a drop off during high tide but during low tide there were at least 100 kids and adults boogie boarding and having a blast. The shark sensor there was picking up sharks most days and we saw seals every day but we felt comfortable swimming anyway. Gorgeous views and lively waves only a 5 minute walk from the campground with free walk in access. Can’t beat that for a budget vacation!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating Shark Safety

Head of the Meadow Beach, like many Cape Cod beaches, is known for its proximity to great white shark feeding grounds. Shark sensors are often deployed and can alert beachgoers to nearby activity. Purple flags are frequently flown to indicate the presence of dangerous marine life. Despite these warnings, many visitors feel comfortable swimming closer to shore, especially during lower tides when tidal pools form. The presence of seals, a primary food source for sharks, is a common sight and a reminder of the natural ecosystem at play. Reddit

It's crucial to stay informed about current conditions. Listen to lifeguard instructions and be aware of your surroundings. While the risk is low, understanding the potential for shark encounters is part of the experience of visiting this wild stretch of coastline. Many visitors report seeing seals daily and still enjoy their time in the water. TikTokReddit

Exploring the Dunes and Wildlife

The sand dunes at Head of the Meadow Beach are a defining feature, creating a rugged and beautiful landscape. These dunes are dynamic ecosystems, shaped by wind and sea. Walking over them offers a unique perspective of the coastline. TikTok

Beyond the visual appeal of the dunes, the area is rich in marine life. Seals are a common sight, often basking on sandbars or swimming near the shore. For those with binoculars, spotting whales in the distance is also a possibility, especially during migration seasons. The presence of seals also indicates a healthy marine environment, though it's a reminder of the larger predators in the area. TikTokReddit
