An old rail track in Northern California could become a 300-mile hiking trail — a 307-mile pathway through remote, wild country along California’s North Coast. Officials say it’s probably 20 years away from completion.
The great thing about converting old rail lines to pedestrian and biking is the inclines aren’t particularly steep, as trains need fairly gradual ascents. I rode a path in France that had been converted, and the climbs were very easy. They built a tunnel through the one hill…

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Great Redwood Trail is praised for its potential as a long, accessible recreational path, particularly the Ukiah section's safe, traffic-free environment for biking and walking. However, some visitors note that certain areas are still under development and can suffer from litter and graffiti, impacting the overall aesthetic.
"As good as walking and biking infrastructure is, this should not come at the cost of rail transportation infrastructure. The trail itself is not a problem, the problem is them removing a railway line to some of northwest CA's most important cities. If they don't want to spend the money to keep the line open to Eureka due to the flooding/landslide problem in the Eel River Canyon, the least they could do is keep it open to Willits, and not remove rail infrastructure for a bike trail; it's not that hard to just build the trail next to the railway."

"The Great Redwood Rail Trail is known by locals as the Ukiah Rail Trail. It is a straight path that follows the railroad tracks. It provides a safe place to ride your bike or walk without dealing with much traffic. There are plans to create a trail from Novato, Ca. to Arcata, Ca. We will just have to wait and see as this project develops and evolves."

"They barely cleaned up the old tran tracts and labeled it "the great redwood trail" even though it's infested with trash, needles, crack heads, and lots of trashy graffiti, horrible trail, waste of tax dollars"
