What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Vicksburg National Military Park for its historical significance and well-preserved sites, particularly the USS Cairo and the trenches. The driving tour is convenient, and the audio guide enhances the experience. Some reviewers wish the visitor center was larger and that more of the battlefield was cleared of vegetation for better visibility.
"I visited on a 92 degree summer day. I was able to see most of the battlefield from the car but there are several critical areas from the battle and statues that you should get out and see. The movie at the visitors center gives you a good overview."

"Going to Vicksburg I didn’t know what to expect. I was met with friendly people as well as a wealth of knowledge and history.
Unfortunately we weren’t able to stay and explore this park as much or as in depth as I would have liked but what we saw was great. We watched the video in the visitors center first then went on the drive. I appreciated that everything was color coded…made it easy to know what was what. The Illinois monument was incredible.
I would definitely visit this again and spend more time here if we drive through this area again."

"I absolutely recommend the visit here to anyone. The battlefield has some markers scattered through the battlefield, like many others I have visited. It is so different here from many other battlefields, because of the terrain. Many are flatter, but this battlefield is very hilly from the trenches. I wish that the visitor center was bigger, I feel that it is too small for a battle of this importance, many other battlefields have big visitor centers with museums. I also wish that the visitor center was open everyday, this is due to changes affecting all NPS Units, it is very sad to see. My last wish is that the battlefield should be cleared like it was during the battle. Many areas have markers, but you can't see the areas, because of all of the trees and vegetation. It wasn't like this during the battle. The USS Cairo museum was great, along with the national cemetery next to it. If your nearby and can take a day trip, I would absolutely recommend it."

The Vicksburg Campaign and Siege
The Union forces bombarded the city daily, forcing civilians to dig caves for shelter. The Confederate defenders, under Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton, were cut off from supplies and reinforcements. The relentless pressure and dwindling resources eventually led to the Confederate surrender. The fall of Vicksburg, coupled with the Union victory at Gettysburg the next day, marked a significant turning point in the Civil War, boosting Union morale and severely weakening the Confederacy.
Visitors can explore the preserved trenches and numerous monuments that dot the landscape, each telling a story of the intense fighting and sacrifices made. The park's driving tour is designed to guide you through the key locations of this pivotal campaign, offering a tangible connection to the past.
The USS Cairo: A Technological Marvel and Survivor
Tragically, the USS Cairo's service was short-lived. On December 12, 1862, while clearing mines from the Yazoo River, it struck a Confederate torpedo (a type of naval mine) and sank within minutes. Fortunately, there were no casualties. The gunboat lay submerged and buried in mud for over a century until its rediscovery and subsequent excavation in the 1960s.
Today, the remarkably preserved USS Cairo is housed in a dedicated museum within Vicksburg National Military Park. Visitors can explore the gunboat and learn about its construction, its brief but eventful service, and the technology of Civil War naval warfare. It stands as the only surviving Civil War-era ironclad gunboat in existence, offering a unique glimpse into naval history.
Beyond the Battlefield: Vicksburg's Broader History
The region also bears witness to other significant historical events, such as the Milliken's Bend skirmish. This battle was notable for the bravery of Black Union soldiers, significantly influencing the U.S. military's perception of African Americans and their role in the fight for freedom.
It's also important to acknowledge darker chapters, like the Vicksburg Massacre of 1874, a tragic event of racial violence that underscores the complex and often painful history of the region. Understanding these broader narratives provides a more complete picture of Vicksburg's past.
