What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Vista del Malpaís for its breathtaking, expansive views of the Borrego badlands, especially during sunrise and sunset when the light creates a spectacular display. Many find the depth of the badlands here to be superior to other viewpoints. However, the journey requires a 4WD vehicle due to sandy and rutted roads, and the lack of amenities means visitors must come fully prepared.
"Vista Del Malpais scenic overlook is an alternative to Fonts Point overlook. Not quite the degree of view as Fonts Point but still a breath taking view of the Borrego badlands. A little more out of the way but worth the trip. A few different ways to get there but probably the easiest would be to start at Thimble Trail off of highway S-22. When the road ends, left on Short Wash. When the road tees, take a sharp right to the end of the wash. There's a small parking area, a short hike and then a breath taking view. Four wheel drive recommended due to soft sand and a small rutted drop off."

"I liked this Vista better than Font's Point. For me, the depth of the Badlands is better viewed, here."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Pack plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection as there are no facilities. The drive itself, especially if you have a capable vehicle, can be an adventure for older kids. For younger children, consider the heat and the need for constant supervision. It's best suited for families who enjoy rugged, natural environments and are prepared for a more primitive experience.
🚗 Off-Road Enthusiasts
This location offers a chance to test your vehicle's capabilities and enjoy the solitude of the desert. The payoff is a spectacular view that fewer people get to experience. Remember to practice Leave No Trace principles and be mindful of the fragile desert ecosystem.
📸 Photographers
Bring your wide-angle lenses to capture the expansive panoramas and consider a tripod for low-light shooting. The unique geological formations offer endless possibilities for creative compositions. Be prepared for a rugged drive, but the photographic rewards are immense.

Navigating to Vista del Malpaís
This off-road aspect means that while the destination is rewarding, the journey demands preparation. Many travelers recommend airing down tires for better traction in the sand. The drive is part of the experience, offering a taste of the rugged desert environment before you even reach the main viewpoint.
Pro Tip: If you're not comfortable navigating off-road or don't have a suitable vehicle, consider joining a guided tour that specializes in desert exploration in the Anza-Borrego area. These tours often include stops at less accessible viewpoints like Vista del Malpaís.
The Magic of Desert Light
Many photographers find that the depth and scale of the badlands are best appreciated when illuminated by this dynamic light. Even if you're not a professional photographer, taking a moment to simply observe how the light transforms the landscape is a profound experience. The quiet solitude often found during these times adds to the magic.
While sunrise and sunset are peak times, even midday offers a stark beauty. The intense desert sun can create high contrast, revealing the raw, rugged nature of the terrain. However, for the most visually stunning and memorable visit, timing your trip for the beginning or end of the day is highly recommended.
Vista del Malpaís vs. Font's Point
Font's Point is generally considered to have a more expansive, sweeping vista, while Vista del Malpaís might provide a more intimate, detailed view of the intricate badlands. The accessibility also differs; Font's Point is often described as easier to reach, whereas Vista del Malpaís typically requires a more robust vehicle and a bit more off-road navigation.
Ultimately, the choice between the two might depend on your priorities. If you're seeking a slightly less crowded experience and a potentially more detailed view of the badlands' topography, Vista del Malpaís is an excellent option. If sheer scale and easier access are paramount, Font's Point might be preferred. Many suggest visiting both if time and vehicle permit to form your own comparison.
