Today is International Picnic Day and what a better place to picnic than Washington-on-the-Brazos! We have many trails around our 300 acre park but the one leading up to Independence Hall lined by shady trees has to be one of our favorites.

Texas delegates met in Independence Hall here at Washington-on-the-Brazos in March of 1836 to draft the Republic of Texas Constitution and the Texas Declaration of Independence. The town was a major river port and supply hub from the 1820’s to the 1850’s. However, the town turned down an $11,000 offer to build the railroad through Washington in the late 1850’s, thinking they were doing just fine...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Independence Hall for its historical significance as the birthplace of the Republic of Texas and the engaging nature of its guides. The park grounds are noted as pleasant for walks and picnics. However, recent renovations have led to partial closures, which some visitors found inconvenient due to a lack of advance notice.

"Closed for renovation.
Partial closure during our visit—looking forward to the finished updates!

We stopped by Washington on the Brazos recently and found that all of the buildings were under construction, and the main historic sites weren’t accessible. It would’ve been helpful if a temporary closure notice had been posted online to better manage expectations.

That said, the park itself is still open and worth a quick stop. You can drive to the large statue area, and the picnic area with a playground and restrooms is available and would be great for families needing a break.

Just a short drive down the road—outside the main park area—you can catch a glimpse of Independence Hall from a distance. While access to the buildings wasn’t possible during our visit, it’s clear that there’s a lot of new development underway, and it looks like the area is being shaped into a meaningful educational destination once completed.

There’s also a grand entrance to the park that sets the tone nicely (wish I had taken a photo!). Even with limited access this time, we’re excited to return once the renovations are complete and the full experience is available."

"Nice little tour they have here. The guides are very informative and lively. They are not monotone robots. This is a reproduction but it looks great and tried to make it as historically accurate as possible. Great for learning more history and taking a short hike down to the pecan tree. There are also little trails out here. Wonderful overall experience ⭐️"

There are also several nice trails to walk on. It has clean facilities to use if needed. The staff was friendly and helpful also."
