"We were unable to book our tour online unfortunately and we read several reviews that indicated we needed to get in line early morning to obtain tour tickets. This was absolutely true.
We got in line around 7:15am (window opened at 8:45am) and there were 2 individuals in front of us. By 7:35-7:45, the line grew. Once the window opened we were able to secure our tickets; however, only about half the people who waited were able to get tickets. Tickets were dispersed QUICKLY! The monument tour was fantastic. The views were absolutely phenomenal. Worth the wait is all I can say.

"I arrived at 7:30 AM to get the free tickets. There were already about 10 people waiting. The sign at the front said tickets are distributed starting at 8:45 AM. (Free ticket pick up location: Washington Monument Lodge) You can let the person to your preferred time slot, and the available times are posted on the window at that moment.
The earliest entry is at 9:00 AM, and groups go up every 30 minutes. Before going up the monument, you have to pass through airport-style security, and at the entrance there’s a list of items you’re allowed to bring.
After getting your ticket, you wait in the seating area until your time slot. Visitors are taken up in groups of about 10, and sometimes if you’re at the back, you might get lucky and be included in the first group.
Once at the top, the view is stunning—you can see all of D.C. at a glance."

The grounds around the monument are beautifully maintained and provide a peaceful space to walk, relax, or take in the surrounding landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial, the U.S. Capitol, and the Reflecting Pool. If you’re able to get tickets (which are free but require advance booking), I highly recommend going to the top. The elevator ride is quick, and the views from the observation deck are spectacular—you can see all of D.C. from up there.
