What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Apgar Village's stunning location on Lake McDonald and its charming, nostalgic atmosphere. Many appreciate the convenience to activities and the beautiful natural surroundings. However, some note that the cabins are aging and lack air conditioning, which can be an issue during peak summer heat.
"Dreamy spot that our Florida family loved a few years back! It felt like we took a step back in time - to before all the tech and digitalization of our world. How lovely! We booked when many rooms had filled up so we took what we could get: our first night staying in The Village Inn, a lodge with all rooms facing south end of Lake McDonald. Then the next 3 or 4 nights we were able to secure a private cabin - our first choice so we could spread out some more and have a kitchen! Honestly, BOTH lodging options were wonderful - the views at the Inn were breathtaking, and we loved the convenience to the water for when the kids wanted to swim. However, the cabins were so close too (50 yards away) and even closer to the eateries and shops. We recommend the cabins for families or those who like to cook! We hope to go back one day!"

"Our stay at Apgar Village Lodge & Cabins was absolutely wonderful! We spent two nights there and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. From the moment we arrived, the service was top-notch—friendly, welcoming, and attentive.
Our room was incredibly cozy and quaint, with everything we needed to feel right at home. Staying within Glacier National Park made the whole trip feel even more special, and we loved being surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the area. The stores and restaurants in the village provided great amenities, and everything was just so convenient and comfortable.
It was the perfect base for exploring the park, and we couldn't have asked for a better place to relax after a day of adventure. We highly recommend Apgar Village Lodge & Cabins for anyone visiting the park. We’ll definitely be back!"

"Rated the room a little lower because it was not cleaned very well and few amenities, but did love our cabin old style feel. The area has a classic camp like feel with gift shops, a restaurant, ice cream place and boat rental. Located on Lake McDonald we loved staying here. We did white water rafting which was nice but very tame with low water levels this time of year. Took a motorboat out on the lake and saw Bald and Golden Eagles. Our favorite hike was Trail of the Cedars and walking to Avalanche lake, about 5 miles through a beautiful forested landscape. There are bear in the area but we missed them at the lake being about an hour late"

Lodging at Apgar Village: Inn vs. Cabins
Private cabins offer more space and often include kitchens, which is ideal for families or those who prefer to cook their own meals. While convenient and close to amenities, some reviews mention that the cabins are older and may be in need of updates, and importantly, they do not have air conditioning, which can be a significant drawback during hot summer months.
Recommendation: For a more comfortable stay, especially during warmer periods, the Inn might be preferable. For families needing more space and cooking facilities, cabins are a good choice, but be prepared for the lack of AC. Booking far in advance is essential for both options.
Activities on Lake McDonald
Boat rentals, including motorboats, are available, allowing you to venture further onto the lake. Some visitors have even spotted bald and golden eagles during their boat excursions. Swimming is also a common activity, though the water is famously cold, even in summer. The iconic rainbow rocks that line the lakebed are a unique feature, making any time spent by the water visually stunning.
Pro-tip: While Apgar Village offers these activities, remember that cell service is minimal, so plan accordingly and enjoy being present in the moment. The lake is also a prime spot for capturing beautiful sunrise and sunset photography.
Exploring Apgar Village and Beyond
Beyond the village, Apgar serves as a gateway to some of Glacier's most beloved natural wonders. The Trail of the Cedars and the hike to Avalanche Lake are highly recommended and easily accessible from Apgar. These trails showcase the park's lush forests and lead to breathtaking glacial lakes, making them must-do activities for any visitor.
Consideration: While Apgar is a fantastic base, remember that access to the Going-to-the-Sun Road requires a timed entry permit during peak season. Plan your park exploration accordingly to make the most of your visit.
