What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Weston Pass for its picturesque scenery and abundant, secluded camping spots, particularly those near streams. The east side offers an easy drive suitable for most SUVs, while the west side provides a more challenging 4WD experience. Some find the views less dramatic than other passes, especially outside peak fall colors, and note the cold mountain mornings.
"A very picturesque drive and very easy from the east side to the pass itself, a little more rocky from the pass on west, nothing that a good clearance small pickup or SUV can easily do this. The camping spots are many and secluded off of the main trail with good signage! So beautiful and repeatable for sure."

"Driving 24 ranger raptor (stock). Not too tuff just pick your line's. Took this sort cut east to west to Leadville."
Brian
"Pretty easy dirt road in my stock SUV with decent ground clearance and 4WD (e.g. 4Runner). Would still be comfortable in an AWD crossover or 2WD truck.
The camping spots are plentiful, but a lot of them are right next to the road or don't offer that much that is interesting. Some of them offer nice access to the streams that flow on either side of the pass. I camped in a nice spot down by the stream on the West side, which was big enough for a large group. I arrived just before dark on a fall Saturday and most of the spots were empty.
Fall colors were past their prime in early October but still nice. If you hit the peak of fall colors it would probably be pretty great, but other than that views are somewhat underwhelming."

Navigating Weston Pass: East vs. West
The west side, approaching from Leadville, is a different story. This section is significantly rougher and requires 4WD. It features more rocks, steeper inclines, and potentially more challenging obstacles. Drivers attempting the west side should have experience with off-road driving and a vehicle properly equipped for such conditions. It's crucial to check road conditions before attempting the west side, as it can become impassable after rain or snow.
Regardless of which side you choose, always check the weather forecast. Conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, and what might be an easy drive one day could become hazardous the next. Having a reliable navigation system, such as a GPS device or a downloaded offline map, is also highly recommended as cell service can be spotty.
Camping and Scenery at Weston Pass
While the pass is undeniably beautiful, some visitors note that the views might be somewhat underwhelming compared to other high mountain passes in Colorado, particularly outside of peak fall foliage season. However, the scenery is still very picturesque, with rolling hills and mountain vistas. The fall colors in early October were past their prime for one reviewer, but still considered nice. If you time your visit for the peak of autumn, the pass can be astoundingly beautiful. Keep an eye out for wildlife; while not guaranteed, sightings of moose have been reported.
Preparing for the Altitude and Weather
Weather in the Colorado mountains is notoriously unpredictable. Snow can fall at Weston Pass even in summer, and conditions can change rapidly. It's crucial to check the weather forecast before your trip and be prepared for a range of conditions, including sun, wind, rain, and even snow. Bringing a reliable map and compass or GPS device is also wise, as cell service is often unreliable in this remote area.
