Ayaz-Kala - Uzbekistan 🇺🇿 One of my favourite adventures of the last few years was to the western side of Uzbekistan, where sitting in the Kyzyl Kum desert there survives ruins of three ancient fortresses of the Kushan Empire, built from the 4th century BC to the 7th century AD. Together they are known collectively as Ayaz-Kala. The Kushan Empire spread to encompass much of what is now Uzbekist...

The resilience of these ancient structures against time and climate is a major highlight. "Great place to visit. Stunning views of desert and of historic fortress. Easy to ascend and walk around. A bit steep walk on broken rocks straight ahead from parking lot but can go to left side from parking lot for easy sandy slight incline. 20,000 cash only payment required at entrance. Has toilets next to parking lot."

James Webster

"Ayaz means windy and it certainly was windy. Those people in the old were some tough cookies. Amazing to see how it has withstood the climate and time. Definitely worth a visit.
There are two ways up, one climbing up some rocks which was doable with a sore knee, and a sandy path up (down) which is longer but much easier. The sandy path is to the left.
Also look at the beetles and other crawling things, they are amazing."

Birthe Oldenborg

"Very impressive site. I recommend to walk around with a dude and spend at least an hour."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Ancient Khorezmian Fortresses

Ayaz Kala Fortresses are a remarkable archaeological complex located in the Karakalpakstan region of Uzbekistan. This site comprises several ancient fortresses, with Ayaz Kala itself being the most prominent, perched atop a hill. These structures date back over 2,000 years, with origins often linked to the Khorezmian civilization and the Kushan Empire. TikTokInstagram

The fortresses, including Ayaz Kala, Kyzyl-Kala, and Toprak-Kala, were strategically built to defend against nomadic incursions and control trade routes. Their construction from mudbrick and straw allowed them to withstand the harsh desert climate for millennia. Exploring these ruins offers a tangible connection to a powerful ancient kingdom that once thrived in this arid landscape. Instagram

Visitors often describe the experience as stepping back in time, surrounded by silence and the vast expanse of the Kyzyl Kum desert. The sheer scale and resilience of these structures are awe-inspiring, providing a unique glimpse into the ingenuity of ancient peoples. InstagramReddit

Navigating the Desert Terrain

The landscape around Ayaz Kala is classic desert – sand dunes and arid plains. Getting to the fortresses involves traversing this terrain. While the main Ayaz Kala fortress sits on a prominent hill, the other fortresses like Kyzyl-Kala and Toprak-Kala are at the base or nearby. Instagram

When ascending Ayaz Kala, visitors have noted two main paths. One is a more direct, steeper route involving climbing over rocks, which can be challenging. The other is a longer, sandy path to the left of the parking area, which is generally considered easier and more accessible. Reddit

It's crucial to wear appropriate footwear. Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are highly recommended to navigate the uneven surfaces, loose rocks, and sandy inclines safely. The desert can also be windy, so consider bringing a scarf or hat for protection. InstagramReddit
