The Baths of Anush Khan, built in 1657 by order of Abulgazi Khan in honor of his son Anush Khan, are considered the earliest example of civil architecture in Khiva. Abulgazi Khan, a noted historian and ruler, commissioned the bathhouse as both a practical public utility and a tribute to his son’s name.
The Anush Khan bathhouse is particularly noteworthy for its advanced heating, water supply, and drainage systems. Heating was achieved through an underground network of smoke channels beneath the floors, which distributed warmth throughout the building. Around the central hall, several smaller rooms served specific bathing functions, each designed with purpose and efficiency in mind.
The walls and vaults are coated with waterproof plaster, while the domed ceilings, typical of traditional Islamic architecture, are simple yet structurally sound due to the modest size of the rooms. This architectural technique ensures durability and efficient insulation.
As with all traditional Oriental bathhouses (hamams), the Anush Khan baths include a lobby, changing rooms, steam rooms, massage chambers, a hot-water pool, and a stokehole. Remarkably well preserved after more than three centuries, the bathhouse continues to function as a wellness center, offering visitors both a historical and therapeutic experience."
