There’s Weird. And Then There’s House on the Rock.
If Wes Anderson designed a haunted funhouse and collaborated with Guillermo del Toro on the details, the result might come close to House on the Rock. Located in the lush hills of Spring Green, Wisconsin, this sprawling, otherworldly attraction is less of a home and more of a labyrinth of obsession.
Built by Alex Jordan Jr., the mansion defies categorization. Inside, you’ll find the world’s largest indoor carousel, entire streets recreated inside, a room with a 200-foot sea monster sculpture, and collections that range from dollhouses to automations to coin-operated orchestras.
It’s part folk art shrine, part sensory overload, and all unforgettable.

Highlights That Defy Logic (and Possibly Physics)
- The Infinity Room: A glass-and-steel hallway that juts 218 feet out over the forest canopy—no supports underneath.
- The Carousel Room: 269 animals. Over 20,000 lights. Not one actual horse.
- The Streets of Yesterday: A cobbled Victorian village trapped in time (and inside).
- The Heritage of the Sea: Home to a whale that could eat your nightmares. In a good way.
Why It’s Worth the Detour
House on the Rock isn’t on the way to anything. And maybe that’s the point. You don’t accidentally end up here. But those who make the trip are rewarded with one of the strangest and most spectacular travel memories in the U.S.
It’s the kind of place that makes you question everything you thought a museum—or a house—could be.
