What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Aluston Fortress offers a glimpse into significant Crimean history, with its ancient walls and engaging guides being highlights. However, some visitors find the entrance fee steep for the current museum exhibition, which is considered less extensive by many. The surrounding area and external structures like the Ashaga-Kule tower are often recommended for appreciation.
"The ancient fortress of Aluston holds incredible memories and secrets. Numerous historical, legendary, and mystical events related to the history of Crimea, the Black Sea, and beyond took place here. Now it houses a museum with displays detailing the city's history. The tour guides are very engaging. The city's history is impressive, but the exhibition is less so. Most disturbing is the construction of a residential building right on the site of excavations. Apparently, selling the land for development is more profitable than preserving Crimea's history. This could have been a very interesting landmark that would attract many tourists."
Ольга Щедрова
"POOR. They barely even noticed me when they quoted the price – 500 rubles. The Sudak fortress costs 300, and it's 30 hectares. The exhibition is worthless; the only historical items are pithoi and a few ceramic vessels. 19th-century apothecary bottles. Clumsy medieval installations. Antique weapons, made for the exhibition. Everything else is a private exhibition dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci, which is probably why the price is so high. I don't recommend wasting your money. It's enough to photograph the Ashaga-Kule tower from the outside and the bust of Justinian in the small park."

"The fortress is old, but it's a pity there's an entrance fee."

The History and Significance of Aluston Fortress
While the fortress ruins themselves are a significant draw, the current museum exhibition has received mixed reviews. Some visitors find the displays, which include pithoi, ceramic vessels, and 19th-century apothecary bottles, to be less extensive than anticipated. There are also mentions of reconstructed elements and even a private exhibition dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci, which some feel contributes to the higher entrance fee. Despite these critiques, the opportunity to walk among ancient stones and imagine the lives of those who defended this outpost remains a compelling experience for history enthusiasts.
Recent concerns have been raised about the construction of residential buildings on excavation sites near the fortress. This development raises questions about the prioritization of historical preservation versus urban expansion, a sentiment echoed by those who believe such landmarks should be more robustly protected to attract tourism and honor Crimea's heritage.
