Best way to visit Arikok national park?

We have a rental car, just a little Kia Picanto but we’d like to drive around the national park. The website says ATVs and UTVs are no longer permitted, that was our original plan. Can we just use our current rental? Should we do a day jeep rental? Thanks!

Visiting Arikok National Park Advice

My boyfriend and I will be visiting Aruba this April and we plan on spending a day exploring Arikok Park! We've rented a tiny Kia Picanto for the week and we would rather not drive that through the park. We are totally okay with hiking but I was wondering if it is even possible…

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Arikok National Park for its stunning natural beauty, dramatic landscapes, and unique geological features like caves and the Natural Pool. The off-road driving experience is a major draw for adventure seekers. However, some find the entrance fee steep compared to the amenities and the lack of well-maintained roads for standard vehicles, leading to a perception of it being a 'tourist trap' for some. Reddit+1

"Cute little park great to drive around with the car (you need a jeep if you want to go to the remove beach). Very challenging but very funny to drive if you like off road. Visit the caves …. The beaches on the ocean side (no swim allowed due to rip currents and potentially big waves)."

Marco Ugolotti

"The scenery is beautiful. But it is not any better than the rest of the gorgeous coastline of the northeast Aruba outside of the "National Park", yet one has to pay an entry fee of $22/person (!). Compare it to the real National Parks in the US where one pays a similar amount for a car, regardless of how many people are in that car. On top of that, unless one rents a 4WD, they will charge you an arm and a leg to drive you to the Natural Pool, because they haven't built any decent road there. And the staff is very unfriendly, and there is nothing to see in the Visitor Center, and points of interest are not well marked, and... yes, they want you to hire a guide and pay more. A tourist trap."

Pavel F

"I would suggest making this a day trip and going early so you can experience the entire national park. You MUST have a Jeep styled 4x4 in order to access a portion of the park which includes the natural pool. They do have "taxi" style vehicle that'll take you to the natural pool but I think you're on their time. You can't leave once you're ready to go. We couldn't go that route because of the vehicle we had. Overall it was a nice scenery once you actually got near the water. Make sure you bring water! They have some for sale at the visitor center but just come prepared."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There

Arikok National Park is located on the eastern side of Aruba. You can drive there in a rental car, but a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended for exploring the park's interior and accessing certain attractions like the Natural Pool. Standard rental cars may be prohibited on rougher park roads. Alternatively, you can join an organized tour that includes transportation. Reddit+1

It's generally not advised. Many rental companies prohibit their vehicles from entering Arikok due to the rough terrain, and you risk damage. If you plan to visit areas like the Natural Pool, a 4x4 is almost always required. Reddit

While you can walk around the visitor center and some immediate areas, the park is vast. To truly experience its diverse landscapes and reach key attractions like the Natural Pool or remote beaches, a vehicle is necessary. Relying solely on walking from the entrance is not feasible for most visitors. Reddit

Taxis can take you to the park entrance, but they won't be able to navigate the rougher interior roads. Public transport does not typically service the park. For extensive exploration, a 4x4 rental or a guided tour is the most practical option. Reddit

If you don't have a 4x4, booking an excursion or guided tour is your best bet. These tours often use specialized vehicles and knowledgeable guides who can take you to the main attractions, including the Natural Pool, and provide insights into the park's geology and history. Reddit+1

The Natural Pool offers stunning turquoise waters against rugged rocks. Quadirikiri Cave's sunbeams create dramatic lighting. Boca Grandi Beach provides a backdrop of wild, powerful waves. The overall rugged, arid landscape also offers unique photographic opportunities. Instagram

Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light for photography, with softer shadows and warmer tones. The midday sun can be harsh. For Quadirikiri Cave, midday is when the sunbeams are most prominent. Instagram

A standard camera or smartphone is sufficient. However, a wide-angle lens can be useful for capturing the expansive landscapes and cave interiors. If you plan on capturing the waves at Boca Grandi, a polarizing filter can help manage reflections. Instagram

Drone usage regulations can vary and are often restricted in national parks to protect wildlife and visitor experience. It's crucial to check the latest park rules regarding drone operation before your visit to avoid any issues. Instagram

Focus on capturing the dramatic interplay of light and shadow within the caves, especially Quadirikiri where sunlight streams through openings. Wide-angle shots can emphasize the scale, while close-ups can highlight rock formations. Instagram
