Country Towns to Visit from Canberra
Just got back from a weekend in Yass, which overall I found a little underwhelming with Wee Jasper (Carey's Caves / the distillery) being the highlight of the trip. It felt Yass was a little short on the touristy side, and moreso setup as a country town built to survive from…

"It was amazing and fun. We did a tour for $10 each and its worth it. So creepy specially seeing those mannequins and it was also humorous and entertaining. Such a beautiful town."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Berrima courthouse. It costs $20 for a family ticket. The lovely lady at reception was very polite and provided lot of helpful information.
We started off with a 20 minute video on the history of Berrima town and how the courthouse and gaol were established by the government.
After the video ended, we went through the Judges chambers where we had a lot of info on history of the town, names of people who came in the first fleet including staff and convicts. We also noted the equipment used on inmates such as whips, handcuffs, holding cells etc.
We then headed into a special show where a real life court case from the 1800s was presented using real life transcripts from back in the day. It was definitely the highlight of the entire experience.
The courthouse is well maintained and tickets and donations are used for building maintenance activities. This is a must visit if you are in Berrima!!"

"Expecting to just walk through an old sandstone court house, I was pleasantly surprised.
I attended with my 12 and 8 year old boys and I was expecting their ability to stay engaged to be tested and how wrong I was.
The lovely lady who served us was very polite and explained the experience well. You start with a great little video on the history of the town and then how the court house came to be. A very entertaining video but the sound at time was a bit hard to hear.
From there you walk through the Judges chambers where you're shown a vast amount of information on not only the town but also the vessels which ferried the convicts across and their staff.
And the main event is a light show and video of the court layout, it's staff and a court case from the mid 1800 which used transcripts from the court. The kids and I loved it and it kept them on edge with the detailed event description and period correct language.
A must visit if you're in the area and a very good family experience, well worth the $20."
