What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden for its stunning natural beauty, especially during autumn when the foliage is at its peak. The free entry, ample space for picnics, and panoramic views are significant draws. While generally well-maintained, some find the pathways a bit confusing, and parking can be challenging during busy periods.
"The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden is one of those places that makes you pause, breathe, and truly appreciate nature. Nestled in the hills, it’s just a short drive from Melbourne but feels like a whole different world. Peaceful, spacious, and absolutely stunning—this place is a must-visit if you’re even remotely into gardens, photography, or just want a scenic walk to clear your mind.
We visited in autumn and were blown away by the colours. The maples, cherry blossoms, and tall mountain ash trees created a vibrant, almost magical atmosphere. The garden paths are well-maintained and take you through a variety of themed landscapes—from native Australian flora to beautifully curated flower beds. Every turn feels like a new postcard.
There’s a large open lawn perfect for picnics, and plenty of benches to sit and take it all in. Even though it’s a popular spot, it never felt overcrowded. Families with kids, elderly couples, photographers, solo walkers—everyone’s just enjoying the calm in their own way.
Parking is free and easy (a big bonus), and there are clean toilets and basic amenities nearby. There’s also a small nursery if you’re tempted to take home some green souvenirs.
One of my favourite things was the lookout point—on a clear day, you get a gorgeous view of the Yarra Valley. It’s the kind of view that makes you want to just sit and soak it in for a while. Bring your camera or phone—you’ll regret it if you don’t!
If you’re heading up to Olinda or Sassafras for a day trip, this garden should be at the top of your list. It’s free to enter, it’s massive, and it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen in Victoria.
Whether you’re into botany or just need a breath of fresh air—this place delivers."
