[NQM] Sveta Petka Church - Sofia, Bulgaria

There’s 2 really cool things about this place imo. 1. There is an Orthodox Church, Mosque, Synagogue, Catholic Church(I think there was also an Armenian church but am not sure) in less than a kilometre apart from the 2 most distant of them and there have never been any problems…

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Church of St. Petka for its historical significance and unique setting below street level, offering a glimpse into Sofia's layered past with integrated Roman ruins. Its location within the symbolic 'Square of Tolerance' is also highlighted as a positive aspect of religious harmony.

"Small church in the city center, one of the oldest churches in Sofia together with the St. George Rotonda. It was first mentioned in the 16th century but it is probably much older than that. I couldn't get inside as ut was locked but from the outside it seems well preserved. Too bad such an old monument today serves as the entrance to a subway station."

Klaus Wanderer

"Many old cities were built in layers. As contractors excavate to build newer structures, they inadvertently reveal layers that had been buried underground for centuries. The area around Sveta Petka, and the church itself, is one such layer. That's the main reason for it being lower than the modern city. Walk around to get a feel of how the city used to be in ancient times."

Georges Younes

"Wonder that is hidden between modern buildings and highways. Kept as authentic as possible. Thanks to the city heritage preservation program kept untouched and maintained."
