What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Western Gate of Serdica an interesting historical discovery, offering a tangible connection to Roman and medieval Sofia. While much of the site is foundations and exposed ruins, the preserved sections of the fortress wall and gate structures are impressive. Some visitors note that a significant portion remains unexcavated or is covered by modern infrastructure, which can be a slight disappointment.
"Very interesting find. Kind of accidentally stumbled on to it while looking for a different specialty shop nearby."
Delores Burnz
"Today, we can only see the foundations of one of the two pentagonal bastions flanking the Western Gate (you can see it on the gate's right side when looking at it from the Observation Deck). The foundations of the symmetrical bastion flanking the Gate on its left are actually not excavated and currently sitting under the parking lot just south of the archeological park... The bastions are different to the other triangular towers/turrets of the wall because the bastions are much wider (going out from both sides of the wall) and actually pentagonal: their inside portion is rectangular and their outside portion is triangular!"
Dimitris Artaxelios
"This archaeological park includes elements of the city's fortification system - the northern pentagonal tower of the gate, with the passage behind it, a triangular tower at the bend of the fortress wall, a section of the fortress wall, with its two belts - internal and external, with a length of approx. 60 m. and width - approx. 4.50 m; parts of the street network - decumanus maximus (the main street connecting the western and eastern fortress gates of the city), via sagularis - the street along the western fortress wall, remains of civil and cult architecture (a three-aisled basilica with a multi-colored mosaic floor from the 4th century); fragments of mosaics in a building in the northeastern part. The archaeological remains date from the period: 2nd half of the 2nd century - 15th century.
In the immediate vicinity stands the Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph."
