Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Heart Creek Trail for its accessibility and family-friendly nature, with the unique abandoned bunker and scenic waterfall hikes being major draws. While generally easy, some note the need for waterproof footwear due to creek crossings. The challenging Heart Mountain Horseshoe loop offers a more strenuous option for experienced hikers.

"Fairly easy hike aside from trying to keep dry feet crossing the creek a few times. Another review recommended hiking poles but didn't need them. We saw a pregnant woman with her toddler walking the whole trail, and a senior wearing ballet shoes. Super easy, and really beautiful."

"EASY trail for families of all ages! A FEW short steep trees, lots of rocks but overall a wonderful stopnfor reconnecting to nature. The trail head starts near the highway but once joined with the creek it is very enjoyable 💗"

Michelle King

"I hiked this trail solo as a moderately experienced hiker in mid August 2025 on a Sunday. Lots of parking space anytime. I did the entire loop (ccw) it's a 12km hike. Bring at least 2 litres of water. It's a challenging hike towards the top of Heart Mountain, lots of scrambling and use of hands on the rock climbing sections. Around 1.5-2hours to the top. You get to see the Exshaw and the Bow River. Then another 3-4hours of hiking to complete the entire loop. Along the way you get to see Grant MacEwan Peak with a glimpse of the beautiful Barrier Lake. Then you get to Tato Peak and there you see Exshaw on one side and Barrier Lake on the other. Then you start the long descent to the Tato Forest, more scrambling going down then a long hike down, you'll see a pond beside the highway and then back to the parking lot. The entire hike was 5hours (slow pace) with additional 2hours worth of multiple breaks and taking pictures. In total 7hours from 11am to 6pm. I recommend this place as a good prep for harder hikes like Carnarvon Lake Trail, Smutwood Peak Trail or Mount Temple. Try it!"
