Starting yesterday, the McLaughlin (Downtown) Oshawa Public Libraries branch is now closed Monday evenings at 5pm. It was previously open until 8pm on Mondays. I asked the library the reasoning for this change and was told the Mayor’s Budget included a $0 budget increase for…

Is there a space where I can do a one hour zoom call once a week?
I work at the library a lot but I can't imagine they would be happy with me carrying on a video call. I have to do a weekly video call for an unpaid internship and I live in Orono where the wifi is working like 50% of the time. I don't have a lot of money, I live with my parents…

Reviews Summary
The McLaughlin Branch is widely praised as a welcoming and resource-rich community hub, with staff often highlighted for their kindness and helpfulness. Families particularly enjoy the engaging children's areas. However, some visitors have noted occasional issues with noise levels and hygiene, and strict adherence to closing times can sometimes lead to disappointment.
"Thank you guys for not discriminating against anyone that walks through your doors. I have witnessed the tremendous selfless help the staff provide to EVERYONE that walks through the doors regardless of their appearance or social class. Life is hard for others at times financially and mentally, so it’s great to see the amount of resources available to the public and it’s definitely a safe space for a lot of people who reside in the area. The staff here are kind and courteous!"

"While the librarians, and staff members are helpful. The security need to improve on their duties. When rude people talk loudly on the phone or with other people, disturbing the peace and other people who are trying to study/work, the security team seems to do nothing to remind the rude people to stop talking so loud and disturbing others.
A good number of the people who come here are homeless people. If you sit down on any of the chairs, be cautious for pests like bedbug and head lice.
Besides the homeless people, unfortunately there are other people who visit who don't care about basic personal hygiene and cleanliness. As a result, sometimes the library smells awful. This is not helpful when you're trying to sit down, concentrate and study/work. Wash yourselves and wear deodorant, people.
After you go home, be mindful of your outside clothes and make sure you don't make the mistake of sitting on your bed, sofa, couch, etc with the same clothes you wore to this library. Check your clothes thoroughly for bed bugs."

"Showed up at 7:55pm to grab a quick movie, and they wouldn’t let me in! All the staff were just standing around with their coats on and walked out at 7:58pm. The security guard was pretty rude, saying that they were closed. I said don’t you close at 8pm and I’ll be out really quick? She didn’t continue the conversation at all. A little disappointing"
