What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Sutherland Falls is overwhelmingly praised for its breathtaking beauty, especially when viewed from the air. Visitors are captivated by its immense height and the dramatic Fiordland landscape. While the scenic flight experience is highly recommended and often described as a 'must-do,' the challenging Milford Track hike offers a more intimate connection with the falls for dedicated trekkers.
"Look for “Blanket creek provincial park” sign. You’ll drive few minutes from the park entrance on winding roads to a parking lot. There’s a sign for the waterfalls at the end of the drive.
Easy 5 minutes walk to the waterfall. Definitely recommend as this waterfall is more bang for your buck, with almost no hiking to see a wonderful waterfall.
When I visited end of May late evening, I was the only one there!"

"Beautiful waterfall and surrounding area. The walk from parking area is short and easy. The water is very fast moving so use caution not to fall in. If you walk through the trees to the top of the falls, there is a lovely, open area of flat rock that would make a beautiful picnic spot or a place to sit and read."
Kristen Hopp
"A hidden but short 2 min walk to these waterfalls. Just down a clear flat path leading to these beautiful big and loud waterfalls. Bring a swater if you don't like getting wet and cold from the waterfalls. Enjoy!"

The Majesty of Sutherland Falls
The falls are famously featured at the end of the epic journey in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, where the Eagles swoop in. This cinematic connection has further cemented Sutherland Falls in the global imagination. While the falls themselves are a natural wonder, their accessibility is part of the adventure. Most visitors experience their grandeur through specialized scenic flights, which offer unparalleled panoramic views of the falls and the surrounding ancient rainforest and alpine landscapes.
For those seeking a more immersive experience, Sutherland Falls is a significant landmark along the legendary Milford Track. This multi-day hike is considered one of the 'Great Walks' of New Zealand, offering hikers the chance to witness the falls up close amidst some of the most pristine wilderness in the world. However, this requires significant planning, including booking permits months in advance due to high demand.
Experiencing Sutherland Falls: Flights vs. Hikes
Conversely, hiking the Milford Track offers a deeply rewarding, albeit challenging, experience. This iconic trek allows you to immerse yourself in the ancient rainforest, cross suspension bridges, and witness the falls from ground level. The journey itself is as much a part of the experience as the destination, with stunning vistas at every turn. However, it requires a significant time commitment (typically 4-5 days), physical fitness, and meticulous planning for permits and accommodation.
It's important to note that some online reviews mention a short, easy walk to 'Sutherland Falls' from Blanket Creek Provincial Park. While this is a lovely waterfall, it is a different, much smaller feature than the grand Sutherland Falls of Fiordland. Travelers seeking the iconic, towering cascades should ensure their plans are for the Fiordland National Park location.
