Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently describe the Tablelands as an extraordinary, otherworldly landscape, unlike anything else in Newfoundland. Its geological significance as exposed Earth's mantle is a major draw, offering a unique educational experience. The accessible trail makes it enjoyable for families, and photographers are captivated by the stark beauty.

"The Tablelands is one of the most extraordinary landscapes we’ve ever seen — unlike anywhere else in Newfoundland, or even Canada. Walking through this otherworldly terrain felt like stepping onto another planet.

The landscape is dominated by rust-coloured peridotite rock, pushed up from deep within the Earth’s mantle half a billion years ago. Because the rock is low in nutrients and high in heavy metals, very few plants grow here, giving the place a stark, barren beauty. This is what makes the Tablelands a key site for understanding plate tectonics — proof of how ancient oceans closed and mountains formed.

We visited with our family and friends, including young kids, and found the area surprisingly accessible. The Tablelands Trail is well-marked and not too challenging, making it a great spot to explore with children while still being deeply fascinating for adults. Along the way, the contrasting scenery — the orange-brown rocks of the Tablelands against the lush green valleys of Gros Morne — is simply breathtaking.

What made our visit even more special was learning that the Tablelands played a role in Gros Morne being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Standing there, you feel like you’re touching a piece of Earth’s inner secrets.

The Tablelands is a must-see when visiting Gros Morne. It’s not just a hike — it’s a walk across the Earth’s mantle, a rare chance to experience the planet’s geological history up close. Perfect for families, photographers, and anyone curious about the story of our planet."

"Easy trail, except to go to the top of the mountains unfortunately I didn't do the difficult trail just the easy one, it took me 1h30 round-trip with magnificent photos taken as souvenirs. The landscapes, the view of the mountains are impressive wow! Also, don't forget to go to Trout River and all the beauty of nature around!"

Geological Marvel: A Window to Earth's Mantle

The Tablelands are a geological phenomenon, representing an exposed section of Earth's mantle. This unique landscape was formed by tectonic forces that pushed up a massive slab of peridotite rock from deep within the Earth's crust. This process, occurring over millions of years, is a direct result of plate tectonics, where oceanic plates converge and one subducts beneath another, bringing mantle material to the surface. The result is an otherworldly terrain that feels like stepping onto another planet. Reddit

The peridotite rock is characterized by its rust-orange color and its low nutrient content, coupled with high levels of heavy metals. This harsh chemical environment severely limits plant growth, creating the stark, barren beauty that defines the Tablelands. Despite the apparent lack of life, specialized and resilient plant species have adapted to survive here, offering a fascinating study in ecological resilience. This unique ecosystem is a key reason why Gros Morne National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reddit

Visiting the Tablelands offers a rare opportunity to witness geological processes firsthand. It's a place where you can literally walk on ancient mantle rock and contemplate the immense forces that shape our planet. The educational value is immense, making it a must-see for anyone interested in geology, Earth science, or simply the wonders of the natural world. Reddit
