Reviews Summary

Belén Waterfall is a beautiful natural spot, praised for its refreshing swimming opportunities and scenic beauty, especially during the dry season. However, some visitors note that the area could be cleaner, and the road can be challenging. The entrance fee and parking situation have also drawn minor comments.

"This is a really pretty waterfall, and it would be even prettier after a big rain. I’m giving 3 stars because it wasn’t as clean of an area as the pictures suggest. The water is dirty and there is litter in the area. Also, paying $4 for parking seems strange after driving down a super bumpy dirt road for 2km. They could at least use the money to keep the area clean. There are pictures of people swimming here, I would not swim here lol. Again, it was nice to stop and hang out for a few minutes, but I wouldn’t plan my day around this."

Kyle Tazuma

"This is a waterfall in area you want to visit during the dry season as it can be quite dangerous during the rainy season due to high current. We went in late April 2025 the water was low we had the entire place to ourselves for 3 hours. There is an attendant there who will watch your car for you for 3 dollars US. No food no nothing available very rural use four-wheel drive to get to it but fairly easy to find"

Richard Donati

"Best Falls & swimming hole near Nosara/ Samara. Parking is plenty, 1 mil colonies to get in, easy path to falls. Not the biggest, but great for a day trip!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Seasons at Belén Waterfall

Belén Waterfall's character changes significantly with the seasons. During the dry season (typically February to April), the water flow is gentler, the pool at the base is clearer, and the surrounding rocks are less slippery. This makes it an ideal time for swimming and enjoying the natural beauty with less risk. Reddit+1

Conversely, the rainy season (from May to November) brings a more powerful and potentially dangerous waterfall. Water levels rise rapidly, and the currents can become strong. While visually dramatic, as noted in one TikTok, it's a time to be cautious and perhaps admire from a safe distance rather than swimming. Instagram Travelers are advised to check local conditions before visiting during these months. Reddit

Visiting during the shoulder seasons or early in the morning can offer a balance of good conditions and fewer visitors, allowing for a more peaceful experience. Reddit

Navigating the Terrain and Safety Tips

Reaching Belén Waterfall involves navigating a somewhat rugged dirt road. While some vehicles can manage, a four-wheel-drive (4x4) is often recommended to ensure a smoother and safer journey, especially if you encounter any muddy patches. Reddit+1

Once at the waterfall, safety is paramount, particularly around the water. The rocks can be extremely slippery, especially after rainfall or if they are constantly wet from the mist. Wearing water shoes is highly recommended to provide better grip and prevent slips and falls. Reddit Divers and jumpers should exercise extreme caution and be aware of the water depth and any submerged obstacles. Reddit

It's also important to note that this is a natural, undeveloped site. There are no lifeguards on duty, and visitors are responsible for their own safety. Always assess the conditions before entering the water and supervise children closely. Reddit

The Belén Waterfall Experience: Beyond the Falls

While the waterfall itself is the main attraction, the surrounding area offers a glimpse into the rural beauty of Guanacaste. The journey there, though potentially bumpy, passes through scenic countryside, often with fruit stands or small stores at key turn-offs. Reddit

Visitors often describe the experience as 'off the beaten path', emphasizing its natural and undeveloped charm. Reddit This means you won't find amenities like restaurants, restrooms, or shops directly at the site. Therefore, packing a picnic is essential for a longer visit, allowing you to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. Reddit The presence of a garbage can in the parking lot highlights the community's effort to maintain the area's cleanliness, so visitors are urged to 'Leave No Trace' and take all their trash with them. Reddit

The tranquility of having the place to yourself for a few hours, as experienced by some visitors, is a significant part of the appeal. Reddit This makes it a perfect spot for a peaceful picnic or simply to unwind to the soothing sounds of nature. Instagram
